Summary: Boys don't cry...
Boys grew up to be men.
Men didn't cry; so, boys shouldn't either.
Late at night, he hid under his covers, trying to be a man; but mummy was crying. Yes, mummy always cried and screamed... There would be split lips and finger-shaped bruises when they would get ready for church in the morning. Then, sometimes, he heard the sound of slaps muffled by closed doors, followed by the familiar thud of a headboard. His mother would cry out in pain, and his father would groan like a dying animal.
On those nights, William fought very hard not to cry.
