A/N Set after Spike gets his sanity back.

Soon as the sun sets, I pull up and park the car on the beach, turning the radio off and grabbing a beer. I sit there for the longest time, just staring at the moonlit night-time waters.

I have to admit, the view's something else.

The sky's clear of the usual pollution, and the stars and moon are shining down, lightin' up everything in a soft silver glow. Haven't seen the ocean since I got my soul, but the waves here are less miserable and foreboding than the ones that broke on that African beach.

I can still remember the salty sting of the air as it hit my wounds, the way the sand rubbed cold and raw against my abused skin as I crawled out of that fucking cave. If it wasn't for some concerned fishermen, I wouldnt've made it past sunrise. Would've just laid there a crying, gibbering mess, too out of it to find day-time shelter or food. Never did thank them, must be the soul that's doin' it, 'cause I want to. They didn't have to, 'specially since they knew I was a vampire, but they did. They were decent. And I feel like a pathetic nancy for thinkin' this way. Need to leave the introverted brooding to Angel, bad enough I'm bein' compared to him, soul and all.

Always figured I'd at least walk out with my head held high, thought I'd be a bit worse for wear but not completely broken. I wasn't broken, I was shattered. Hurled against the bloody wall and left, forgotten and alone, to pick up the pieces without even my pride to help fit it all back together.

I drop my gaze to the mostly empty beer bottle in my hand, unable to look out the windshield anymore.
