I actually wrote this forever ago, and just now found it again in one of my (giant) piles of idea stuffs. I kind of like it where it is, but I think I could stand to turn it into something longer, like a short 4 or 5 chapter drabble series. If I get positive feedback for that, I may extend it. Otherwise, I think I'll keep it "complete" for now. Also, I'll be updating Songs from the Future later this afternoon (it's midnight in my timezone), so keep an eye out!
Even though she'd said her goodbyes, she hadn't wanted to. She'd wanted to stay forever, like she'd always imagined – like they'd always haltingly talked about.
But things had changed.
She couldn't pinpoint the month, or the day, or the hour that it had happened, but after Kikyo had joined their group, even the air had changed.
Kagome could feel it in the way Inuyasha looked at her less and less, and looked at Kikyo more and more. And rather than smile at her like he'd done for a while, he would scowl and look away.
She ignored the first few nights when the two of them slipped off alone, tried to be understanding. But as they began staying away later and later, Kagome, heart deep in her stomach, had finally given into her curiosity, knowing full well the possibilities that might come of it.
She'd tried to tell herself that she could stand to live in ignorance if ignorance could make her happy. But that had only worked for so long, because she wasn't happy. She hadn't been for a while.
So it was with a great amount of reluctance that she followed them that fourth night.
When she saw them, clinging to each other, lips pressed firmly together, she was shocked at what she felt –
Relief.
And that, more than the scene she had witnessed, was what disturbed her.
