author's note: hey everybody! alas, i shamefully return with a oneshot, i'm sorry for my absence..but i've recently become obsessed with these two adorable dorks, and i figured i needed to contribute something. this is a divergent!au, and yes, Kai and Jinora are both transfers into Dauntless because of reasons. (jinora is divergent but kai is not, not that it really matters in this oneshot but I felt it needed to be stated). In addition, they are both 16.

copyright:the setting in which these characters take place belongs to the lovely veronica roth, and mike and brian (Nickelodeon) are responsible for these little nerds.

Trouble

divergent!au

At first, nobody in the transferred initiate class could deny that Jinora didn't seem like she'd survive at all in Dauntless. Her scrawny appearance looked easy to beat, easy to break. But as she stepped up the plate, her round oak eyes wide with apprehension as she faced her first opponent, Kai, it was found that fighting came naturally to her, in her own way.

No matter how many of the strongest attacks Kai approached her with, Jinora dodged them with agility, her graceful stances packing a hard punch at the end of every move. He would in turn fight back, yet he knew he was no match for her. The fight only went on for about ten minutes until the poor boy felt as if he couldn't go on any longer, and as he looked up into her eyes, shamefully cowering on the ground, Kai saw a flash of regret before the fair-skinned girl finished him off with a kick to his cheekbone.

Yet, Jinora helped him up, after the crowd of initiates scattered off to resume their own training, or to witness another fight. Her hands were soft, like silk, but appeared calloused through vigorous training. His face flushed with embarrassment as he recalled the memory of what had recently occurred and a thought he had just mulled over, before sending them into the 'Don't-Ever-Think-About-That-Ever-Again' section of his mind. Kai's hand rubbed at the bruise that was slowly forming on his cheek and examined her curiously. She was petite in stature, but she had these stunning brown eyes that made him weak in the knees. Her hair, matching her eye color, was short, yet it looked softer than her hands felt.

"Sorry," Jinora quickly apologized, the corners of her mouth sliding up regrettably, her hands moving back from his arms to her sides. Kai felt a twinge of disappointment before glancing up at her cautiously. This girl was trouble. She beat him up, now she's apologizing, and he's starting to feel attracted to her. It took him a moment to realize she was still speaking. "-that was kind of intense, even for me.."

Kai opened his mouth and closed it, his dark eyebrows knitting together, bewildered. "Actually..it was really incredible." He murmured, looking up at her, his green eyes alight in wonder. Jinora blushed faintly, her bottom lip pulling in between her teeth, possibly to hold back a grin.

"I-If you want, I could teach you what I know," The brunette offered, her smile finally breaking out of its restraints. "We could train together." Kai nodded, a grin reflecting her own.

"Thanks, that's real nice of you," The boy said, blushing darkly when she took his hand to lead him to the punching bags. This girl was totally trouble.

"I'm Jinora, by the way." She added, looking back at him, a small smile gracing her features.

"I'm Kai..It's very nice to meet you, Jinora." He returned, his tone light, yet he was completely, irrevocably sincere. As his new friend blushed, turning around with a bell-like laugh, Kai found that he was completely okay with that.

a/n: many apologies if the characters were off, or if my writing wasn't satisfactory. hope you enjoyed this though! maybe later i'll make a multi-chapter divergent!au, but for now it's just a oneshot. c:
