Question One: If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
It was Christmas time. Hogwarts was nearly empty. Of Gryffindor students only three had elected to stay. All three would soon be finishing school and leaving. She called them to the common room and said she wanted to get to know them better before the year was out.
"I know just the thing," James said, grinning at the opportunity to learn more about Lily. He brought out a pack of cards. "We could play Twenty Questions. Sirius and I played this during our first train ride to Hogwarts."
"Everyone will answer the question picked from the pack," Sirius explained.
McGonagall accepted the game. She picked the first card. "If you were an animal, what animal would you be?" She didn't even have to think of it. "I would be a cat," she said.
The others looked at each other, wondering who'd go next.
"Ladies first," James said, looking at Lily pointedly.
Lily had to think about it. "I would be a Doe," she said finally.
"I would be a Stag," James replied, looking Lily straight into the eye.
"Really, James!" Lily exclaimed. "You just…" She blinked as James actually turned into a Stag.
"Looks like there's an enchantment in the cards to stop arguments like that," Sirius said. "You should apologize for doubting him, Lily Doe."
"I'm sorry I doubted you James," Lily said. "You are a stag. Please turn into human again."
"It's all right my Doe," James told her after turning back, grinning widely.
"Your turn Sirius Black," McGonagall said.
"I would be a dog," Sirius told her.
McGonagall rolled her eyes. "Really, just because you're named after the dog star doesn't…" she stopped abruptly as Sirius turned into a big black dog and barked at her.
