Leaves swirled around on the ground outside. Matt could barely see them out the window of his jail cell. As the breeze caused the leaves to dance through the air, he thought about how ironic it was that he ended up here.
Man DeKiller sure did pick a lousy lawyer. I thought lawyers were supposed to defend their client, not prove them guilty.
Imprisonment for life, because he was guilty of the charge of murder. Sure, maybe it was true, but this was not the way it was supposed to end.
Besides, I didn't kill anyone. The assassin did.
"Mr. Engarde," the guard interrupted his brooding.
"What?"
"You have a visitor."
"Great." Matt dragged himself out of his chair to the glass pane, and there was the one person he never thought he'd see again.
"Celeste?" he gaped at the woman standing before him. "You're…you're…"
"Surprised?" She grinned.
"A little, I kind of thought you were…you know dead." She looked a little different, a lot like the girl De Killer had kidnapped for ransom. But nonetheless, it was definitely Celeste.
"I am," was the only explanation she offered.
"Oh."
"So…it looks like you finally got what you deserved, Matt." She smiled as she spoke.
"Me?" Matt laughed incredulously. "Are you saying I deserved this?"
"Well, take a good look at me. I'm dead Matt, and it's your fault. And now look at you, look where your precious self image has gotten you."
"Oh please," Matt rolled his eyes. "Juan was going to ruin me, so I took care of him."
"It didn't help you out much did it?"
For once, he didn't have much to say. "Hmph. I guess not."
There was a silence that seemed to hang in the air between the two.
"You know, I really loved you. I did, but it was all a game to you."
"Love?" he scoffed. "Babe, there's only one thing women are good for." She ignored his snide comment and continued.
"Then I met Juan and I was…I was so happy. But I didn't think that it would be over so soon. You men and your stupid pride. Why did you tell him, Matt? We were…we were going to get married."
"Because…" his eyes lowered to the floor, but then they met with hers. "I didn't want him to have everything that was important to me." Celeste was taken aback for a moment at his touching words, but she wasn't going to let herself be deceived for long.
"Well…I ended it. A little selfishly I suppose. But you drove me to my breaking point, I just…I couldn't take it anymore."
"And that," Matt said. "Is the reason Juan is dead. Had he disclosed that to the public…"
"Yeah, your 'refreshing like a spring breeze' image would be ruined blah blah blah…I suppose you haven't changed at all."
"Maybe not, but there are other things that haven't changed either."
"Oh?" she inquired. "And what might these be?"
"My feelings for you." He smiled in such a charming, innocent way that she couldn't help but smile back.
"I see…well I guess I'll see you around then."
"I somehow doubt that," he smirked. He didn't plan on dying anytime soon. He may have been in jail, but at least he was safe from DeKiller here.
"Right. Goodbye Matt," she called over her shoulder as she walked down the hall of the detention center.
"Goodbye, Celeste," he grinned, blowing a kiss to her and waving until she was out of sight.
Matt suddenly burst into hysterical laughter as the sound of a door slamming shut echoed through the halls.
Some people just never learn, do they?
