Sweet silence warmed his heart as he gazed at her beautiful face.
"Why are you grinning like that?" She asked pushing back a blush and moved a lock of hair from her face. Despite her efforts it fell back in front of her left eye. His grin turned into a wide smile and he reached out to tuck the hair behind her ear.
"I love that we can just sit here, and not say a thing." He responded like it was such an obvious answer.
"Why do you like that?" Katniss asked unsure if she should be offended.
"Because, it means we are comfortable with each other. I can just sit here silently with you and I wouldn't rather be anywhere else." His answer went right to her heart and his gaze pierced her eyes. Katniss was unable to push back this blush and looked away, attempting to at least choke down a dumb smile that commanded her lips. He wouldn't let her hide from him and held her hand while she looked away.
"We are almost there." Katniss said it just to take the attention away from her. Peeta did look up from her and noticed that they were minutes away from the station. As if on cue the train's intercom clicked and the conductors scratchy voice echoed in their cart.
"We are approaching our last stop and should arrive within ten minutes. Welcome everyone to Clifton, Virginia." Peeta gripped her hand tighter and swallowed. This was it. The big change in their lives. Katniss had finally agreed to move away with him and he had managed to convince her it would all work out. He wasn't entirely sure how things were going to go, but he had her, and that's all he would need. Sure there were going to be problems, but there was nothing that he would allow to get in their way.
Katniss leaned her head on his shoulder and looked up at him. He could see it in her eyes. She was nervous, but excited. Her face didn't have the worries that he felt gripping him tighter the closer they got to their new home. Peeta smiled at her despite the worries and hoped she couldn't tell how stressed he was. He just tried to focus on her warmth beside him, and that even now the little change of just being away from things was already making their lives better. The past year had made what lives they managed to scramble up fall apart around them. It was a devastating past few months in particular.
"We should grab our things." Katniss started to get up but Peeta stopped her by not letting go of her hand.
"Not just yet." She looked at him confused. "I want to just enjoy this moment a bit longer." He smiled and it comforted her. He just wanted to save this moment. To never forget their first day in their new home. He wanted to remember the sun shining brightly into the cart making it seem like they arrived in heaven. The way it made her hair glow and how it brought out the color in her eyes. The wet spot on his shoulder sticking to his skin because Katniss drooled on him in her sleep. He wanted to keep this perfect moment forever.
"Lets go!" She pulled him up with their clasped hands. "We have been here for five minutes already. I'm starving!" She grinned at him and the look in her eyes demanded the desserts he promised to get her when they arrived. A huff of air escaped his mouth and he reluctantly got up. He couldn't put it off any longer. It was time they started their lives in Virginia. For good or for worse.
