Running from the Unknown

One night I found myself full of despair
I wandered through the streets, unaware
of the dangers that followed me along the way.
Unaware that I didn't really want to stray
so far from what I knew.
When I found myself lost, I didn't know what to do.
I heard a noise, a soft crunching of someone behind me.
I took off, too scared to turn around and see.
The shadows followed me as I ran
down each alley, all the while trying to scan
for my pursuer. Tears streamed down my face
as I heard them growing closer yet,
and I stumbled and fell, covered in sweat.
Whimpering in pain and terror, the person appeared,
but it wasn't as scary as I first feared.
Jesus stood before me, smiling gently
with his loving eyes peering at me intently.
He offered me a hand to stand up, and I took it slowly
and I leaned against him for support, ashamed I tried to flee.
I asked him timidly, "Jesus, why did you scare me?"
And softly he replied, "My child, I only wanted to see
that you would be all right in your time of depression."
He smiled as he carefully watched my surprised expression.
Continuing, he added, "I only wanted to protect you, my little one,
and I certainly didn't want you to see you run.
I was merely following you so as to keep you from harm."
Softly he brushed my tears away. "I didn't mean to cause alarm."
He led me away from the alley, offering support the whole way;
I have never felt as loved as I did that day.
