All He Had Was Hope

AN: I do not own Digimon blah blah blah.

Let me just say that I hated the epilogue of season 2. I am still bitter that they did not show Takeru and Hikari together. They were supposed to be endgame! Anyway, as much as I don't accept it, I wrote this short piece with that episode in mind.

(from Webster's illustrated dictionary)

hope (hōp), n. desire accompanied by expectation; confidence; thing hoped for: v.i. to wish expectantly; to trust; to imagine.

He has always been in love with her. Anyone who knew him enough could see it…except, maybe, her. It could be seen in the way he acts around her. His face would light up from the mere sound of her voice. A smile would appear on his face from only catching a glimpse of her. The mention of her name would seize his interest. That is how it has always been.

Their friends would not cease teasing them about being a couple throughout their school lives. They did almost everything together. They walked to school together. They spent lunch together. They went home together. They spent their weekends together, too. Guys would ask him if they really were together. He would never deny nor would he confirm it; he would simply smile wistfully and walk away. The teasing did not stop.

Soon, they grew up. They chose different careers, each time consuming. They still made time but they rarely saw each other. Because of their rare meetings, guys around her stopped assuming that she was taken and started asking her out. She went out with a few of them. This fact shattered his heart again and again. He never said anything. He just smiled to cover the pain as he listened to her excited voice talk about how her date went. He did not throw tantrums nor did he shout inexcusably. After all, he was a grown man.

She was glowing. That was the first thing he noticed when he opened his apartment door. The second thing he noticed was the ring on her fourth finger. His heart seemed to shatter more. As she finished her jubilant speech, all he could say was a strangled "Congratulations!" He hugged her so that she would not see his miserable face. She returned the hug ecstatically. She did not seem to take notice of his discomfort. She was as radiant as her light.

Of it all, he waited. He never made the first move to let her know. This is because the man named Takeru Takaishi was not courage nor was he love. He was not sincerity either. Takeru Takaishi was hope. And as great as hope is, it brings about nothing if nobody steps up to fulfill it. And to him, it seems, Hikari Yagami's light was far too blinding. All he had was hope.

~The truth is I have a lot of things I want to tell you, but
It won't come out right~

Hmm...I left the story at Hikari being engaged because...well I'll leave that to the reader's discretion. You tell me what happens after. Thanks for reading. Leave a review. ^^
