Rating: PG
Category: V
Keywords: Scully, Doggett, S/D UT (I'm borrowing Dust's
category ;-)
Spoilers: None really, but this is set early S8. (I'm
thinking 'Patience')
Summary: It's not just a physical distance that prevents
them from being partners.
Disclaimer: The characters in this piece are the property of
CC, 1013, FOX, and the actors who portray them; no
infringement intended and no money is changing hands over
this. There. That was standard.

For spookycc, who managed to write the word 'concerned' four
times in two contexts and in one paragraph and got the word
stuck in my head...

Scully rarely says hello. She is reserved and polite as
always, remaining on her side of the thin line. Vibrations
translate to electrical impulses, airwaves reverberate to
unseen frequencies, crackle out of compact handsets as
sound. The distance separating them is clear by the
background echoes and the detachment in her voice.

The usual statements are made, formalities dispensed with
quickly. Scully rarely says hello and never says goodbye, so
when it is over and she hesitates her silence speaks. /I
can't trust you/, it says. /But if you give me a reason, I
can try./

All Doggett can offer her is his support, his dedication,
his concern. For now it is not enough. A second later he is
gripping the phone to his ears in a futile gesture, hearing
only an insistent dial tone, an invisible voice hissing
unwanted sympathy into his ears.

"Talk to me," he almost wishes. The static holds no answer.
