Amy sat on the porch trying to read, but her mind couldn't register the words. Ty was coming home today. Excitement fluttered in her chest, but she couldn't deny the anxiety in her stomach. They hadn't seen each other in person for months. Being apart had never gone well for them before.
At the crunch of tires on the driveway, she looked up to see a taxi. Heart pounding, a smile on her lips, she tossed her book aside and stood up. She wanted to run down to the taxi, but her swollen belly forced her to waddle.
Ty dropped his bags and opened his arms wide. He had longer hair and a slight beard, but he was the same man Amy had waved goodbye to four months earlier. All of her worries and fears seemed to disappear, and she rushed forward to greet him.
"I missed you so much," Amy exclaimed.
"So have I," Ty agreed. They exchanged a long embrace and kiss.
When they eventually pulled back, Ty gently placed his hands on Amy's large belly. "Look at you! How has the nugget been doing?"
Amy put her hands on top of his. "Doing really well. Can you feel all that movement?"
Ty stared at Amy, open-mouthed. "Wow!" Ty shook his head in wonder.
Then the rest of the family came out of the ranch house. Amy stood back and watched them greet Ty. The family stood on the driveway exchanging hellos and stories. Finally, Amy and Ty were able to head up to the loft. As they walked, Amy didn't know why she had been so nervous about Ty coming home. It was as if he had never been away.
Later that night, Ty and Amy were snuggled up on the couch, enjoying being in each other's arms again.
"This is for you." Ty handed Amy a small package.
Amy eagerly tore the paper away and pulled out a small baby blanket.
"Oh, Ty! It's beautiful!" she gasped, holding it up to get a better look at it.
"I found it in a market we visited one day. It was handwoven by this tiny old lady who reminded me of Mrs. Bell," Ty explained, delighted at his wife's reaction. "I thought it would be perfect for the baby."
Amy put the blanket down and began to cry.
"Amy, what's wrong?"
"I'm just so glad you're home and safe. I didn't realize how much I missed you," Amy sobbed.
"Hey, I said I would come home, and I kept my promise," Ty gently reminded her.
"I know, but I was worried that..." Amy trailed off.
"What?" Ty prompted.
"That something would happen and you wouldn't be back." Amy explained quietly.
"Oh, Amy. Let's not think about that. I'm safe, and you and the baby are safe. Everything will be ok. We shouldn't think of all the what if's." Ty took Amy's hands in his.
Amy nodded. "I'm just so glad you're here."
"Me too," Ty agreed. He kissed Amy's forehead, and Amy placed her head on his shoulder. They sat like that in silence. No words were needed. After a while Amy slowly got to her feet and waddled over to the cradle. She tucked the blanket into the crib and stood back to admire it. Ty joined Amy and wrapped his arms around her.
"It won't be long before there will be a little someone sleeping in there." Amy mused.
"No, not long at all." At Amy's yawn, Ty suggested, "Let's go to bed. You look tired and I am feeling jetlagged."
Once they were in bed, Amy grabbed the laptop.
"The baby has grown, hasn't it?" Ty gasped.
"It sure has. Sometimes it'll start kicking at night and keep me awake," Amy chuckled.
That night, Amy slept the best she had in months. Being wrapped up in Ty's arms made her feel safe and secure. It was comforting to know that Ty was home and that they would start this new journey together.
