A/N: Since I am currently experiencing writer's block for my other story, I have decided to write something completely different. I have never found a crossover like this and am pretty sure my idea is quite original. This is an evangelion/inuyasha crossover. Although this is the Inuyasha area, there will probably be equal parts inu and eva in this fic. I'm taking a few liberties with this story, and will be altering the storyline to make it fit evangelion. The story will include some spoilers for evangelion, and sadly, will take part mostly in the present day. You'll see why when you read the story. This also means there will not be a whole lot of Miroku or Sango, but I may be able to fit them in later. I am just writing this off the top of my head after all. Nothing is concrete. I have also changed it in that the pilots are 15 not 14, the same age as Kagome. The story begins at evangelion episode 11 when Shinji and the others are crawling toward the surface to battle the angel during the power failure. It will begin in the Evangelion perspective, but will soon change. I think I'll stop rambling now and start the story. I don't quite know what to call this yet, so I think it'll just be Project Eva for now.

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha or Neon Genesis Evangelion. They are the property of Rumiko Takahashi and Gainax respectfully.

Chapter 1: Underestimated Foe

Deep in the recesses of NERV Headquarters, the forms of Eva Units 00, 01 and 02 can be seen silently crawling towards the vertical launch shaft via a ventilation duct.

The power failure that occurred, had crippled NERV, and everything had had to be done manually.

Shinji Ikari, seated within the cockpit of Unit 01, let his thoughts drift as he silently followed Rei Ayanami within Unit 00. 'Looking at us now, you would never have guessed NERV to be the most technologically advanced military installation in the world' he pondered.

'Man has become so dependent upon machines, that without them, they seem to lose their sense of self' Shinji had often heard his father mention that technology made man powerful, but yet, he and the others had shown great determination and resourcefulness when they had readied the Evas for launch, without the help of the computer systems.

 'My father'

. His father had abandoned Shinji at an early age. He had been rejected, unwanted, and spurned. And yet, the moment he was called, he had come to his father's aid. 'Why?' he thought.

'Because I was told to' was his response.

He had come, just like the obedient little boy he was. And no matter how much pain it brought him, he had agreed to pilot Eva 01, simply because he had been ordered to, at least that's what he believed.

'I'm such a coward.'

His thoughts however, were intruded upon once again as he heard the comm. link come online, and the face of the beautiful redheaded German girl appeared before him. She was behind him in Unit 02, and as always, wore that haughty expression of superiority, as she stared into his face.

'Asuka'

Shinji mentally cringed as he imagined what she would have to say to him. Asuka Langley Sorhyu never had anything nice to say to him, and was always teasing him, and Shinji was pretty sure that she was not about to be nice anytime soon.

"Ugh! Shinji this is so embarrassing!" She cried in exasperation. "We're Eva pilots for crying out loud! Look at us! We're crawling on our hands and knees like meek little mice. This is not how the great Asuka Langley Sorhyu is supposed to charge into battle!"

Shinji had to keep himself from visibly sighing in relief. Asuka was not complaining about him… for once.

"And could you move a little faster Third Child? I swear by the speed you're moving, I'd say your sync ratio was 2%."

"Guess I spoke too soon." he muttered.

"What was that Third Child?" she demanded hotly.

"Nothing Asuka! Sorry, I'll try to move a little faster."

" You better Third Child, because if I'm stuck in here any longer I swear I'll-"

"We are here" interrupted the monotone voice of Rei Ayanami, pilot of Eva Unit 00. "The vertical launch shaft is just beyond this steel grate. Once we remove it, we will be able to climb to the surface."

"Hey! I give the orders around here Wondergirl! Remember I'm the leader? Asuka huffed indignantly.

"Yeah, only because you say so." Shinji said to himself

"What was that Shinji?! Do you have something to say?!" she asked menacingly.

"N-No of course not Asuka." Shinji stammered. He didn't like that fiery look in her eyes.

"Good." She stated. "Out of the way Wondergirl! I'll show you what a real Eva pilot can do."

Rei meekly moved to the side, and allowed Asuka, in her Unit 02, to approach the opening. With a few good kicks, she managed to knock it away, before clambering into the shaft and beginning her ascent. Rei followed soon afterward, and finally Shinji emerged as well, all continually climbing the shaft towards the sunlight.

Suddenly, Asuka caught a glimpse of something shiny drip from above, and a moment later, a searing pain was shooting up her arm. She cried out in alarm as more of the substance began cascading from the opening above. She screamed in pain as it melted the thick armor of her Eva, the nerve connections allowing her to feel every agonizing moment of it.

"It's acid!" She heard Rei shout beneath her. She felt her grip on the shaft loosening, and as a drip of acid caught her foot, she slipped and finally fell atop Rei, who in turn, fell on Shinji, causing his Unit 01 to begin plummeting down the shaft.

Gritting his teeth, Shinji forced his Eva to brace the walls, and in a shower of sparks, finally succeeded in halting the fall, with Units 00 and 02 on his back. He noticed immediately, that they were in front of some sort of opening, but also noticed that they couldn't fit inside with all of their weapons.

"Asuka, Rei!" he called. "You'll have to abandon your progressive knives and your guns if you want to fit in this opening!"

"Without another word, they let their weapons drop, and climbed in before another spout of acid consumed them.

"This is just great!" Asuka cried. "We have no way to contact Misato or the others, and now we're trapped and defenseless. Great job Shinji, abandoning our only weapons so we can die here instead of out there."

"I'm sorry Asuka. I just wasn't thinking." He meekly replied.

"Oh here he goes again, apologizing, and bowing his head in shame. Grow a spine Ikari."

That last remark hit a nerve. He had apologized and she still treated him like shit. But Shinji Ikari was not one to lash out, and instead tried to solve things peacefully.

"Look Asuka," he began "I know you don't like me, and you think I'm a pathetic coward, but if we're going to get through this alive, we're going to have to work together and formulate a plan. There are a lot of people counting on us. People who worked so hard to prepare the Evas for us even though there was no power. Now we have to use what we were given and try to save them, because we are mankind's last hope."

He finished speaking, and realized that he had not stuttered once during that whole speech. He looked into the eyes of the fiery German, and for a brief moment, a strange emotion flashed across her eyes, before it was gone, and replaced by that proud haughty look once more.

Asuka was roiling inside. She had never heard Shinji talk like that. He had swallowed his pride and admitted he would need her help to finish this mission. It took a lot of guts to do something like that. And Asuka found herself actually admiring him for once, without the slightest tinge of jealousy. She also felt something else, something that she had felt when he had risked his life to save her, when she had been sinking into the lava.

"All right Third Child, you want a plan, well I think I've got one" she replied haughtily.

"There will be three positions in this plan, offense, defense, and backup. Defense will neutralize the Angel's AT field and shield the others from the acid. Meanwhile backup will go down the shaft and retrieve Wondergirl's rifle, and toss it to offense, who will destroy the angel. Any questions?"

"I will take the position of defense" Rei said softly.

"Sorry Wondergirl, but that position is mine, you'll be backup" replied Asuka.

"But that's the most dangerous position." Shinji argued.

"I know" she said. "But I still want to take it." "Besides," Asuka replied, "I've still got to pay you back for last time. Now, are we all agreed? Shinji will take offense, I'll take defense, and Wondergirl will take backup."

"Agreed!" both said simultaneously.

"All right then, let's get started. One, Two, Three, Go!"

And with that, Asuka leaped from the opening and braced herself with Unit 02's back facing the acid. She tensed with pain as she felt the liquid drench her Eva, fighting tears she refused to shed.

Meanwhile Shinji positioned Unit 01 beneath her Eva and waited for Rei to toss him her gun. She touched down, grabbed the rifle, and tossed it back to Shinji.

"Get out of the way Asuka" he yelled.

She nimbly rolled back into the opening giving him a perfect view of the target overhead. He immediately released a volley of gunfire towards the large exposed eye above. However, as Asuka rolled out of the way, her AT field dropped and the angel was able to protect itself from the blast. It howled in pain, and quickly retreated from view. All was silent as the three Evas strained to catch any sounds its retreat would make. They heard its lumbering steps fade into the distance.

"Scheisse" Asuka cursed. "I thought we had it there, what the hell happened Shinji? Couldn't you kill one little angel?

Asuka knew that it was in fact her fault that the angel had escaped. The pain from the acid had been so great, that she had lost her concentration and accidentally dropped her AT field. But she would never admit that, especially not to the 'All Mighty Third Child' 'Invincible Shinji Ikari' as she sarcastically put it. She would never show weakness. She was not weak, and yet she had failed. She had failed at the critical moment.

"I'm sorry Asuka" Shinji replied softly. He had screwed up again.

'I'm so useless' he thought to himself.

"Yeah, well just forget about it Shinji. Let's just concentrate on killing it. We only have three minutes left before our power runs out, so we'd better make the most of it"

"All right Asuka." Shinji replied, his voice trembling slightly.

Shinji was shocked. Had Asuka just acted civil towards him, Shinji Ikari? He was speechless. All he could do was just sit there with his mouth hanging open. 'Maybe Asuka doesn't hate me after all.' He snapped back to reality however, when he noticed he was the only one left in the shaft. Rei and Asuka had gone on ahead to fight. With a ghost of a smile gracing his lips, Shinji too began climbing out of the shaft.

Just as he was reaching the opening, his comm. link came back on followed by booming laughter. He recognized the lilting laugh as that of Asuka, and found himself transfixed as he listened to her beautiful voice.

"Ha ha ha he he, Shinji you gotta see this thing." She gasped between fits of laughter.

"It-It's s-so pathetic! Ahahahah! I don't think you need to come up here, this thing will be dead before you leave that hole."

Curious, Shinji peeked out of the hole, and saw exactly why the creature reduced Asuka to a laughing fit. It really was quite pathetic. It didn't seem to have weapons of any kind, and just seemed to resemble a giant spider.

Eva 02 sauntered up to the angel. In defense it lashed out one of its legs, but it was easily caught and ripped off by Asuka's powerful Eva. She then picked up the angel and threw it across the city, snapping off most of its legs from the fall. It feebly tried to stand up, but soon just fell to the ground and was silent.

"See Shinji? That is how you handle an angel. Come on lets go finish it off before-." But she was stopped suddenly when she felt something slam into the side of her Eva. Shinji could just look in horror as the once prone angel regained its lost limbs. Suddenly, the angel let out a sharp screech, and began to tremble and convulse. The only way that he could describe what happened next is that the angel began to… transform.

Asuka had recovered from the blow of the limb, and was now running in a blind rage towards the enemy, but she was violently thrown in Shinji's direction as she came into contact with its AT field.

Without thought, Shinji instinctively caught the flying Eva, falling to the ground beneath it.

"Dumkopf! What do you think you're doing Shinji? Forget about me and get that thing," Asuka screamed as she untangled herself from his Eva.

" I will try" came the soft voice of Rei.

"Wait Rei! That thing's AT field is too strong. We'll have to wait until it finishes its transformation, before we try to attack.

So they just stood there as they watched the angel begin to expand and take shape. A brilliant light was emanating from its many eyes, enveloping it in a screen of pure energy. When the glare finally died down, the angel stood before them, transformed and ready for battle.

Shinji realized Asuka was no longer laughing.

Meanwhile somewhere else, or more precisely some when else, a figure can be seen silently creeping across an expanse of ground towards what appears to be an old well.

Else where, in a small hut sit the figures of a man and a woman. The man is dressed in the purple robes of a monk. A dazzling smile graces his features, and he is absently pulling at a small ponytail at the nape of his neck. He moves towards the woman who cautiously edges away from his hands, her deep auburn eyes staring back into his defiantly.

Only one word can describe this woman, beautiful. That is the only word you can use for a person with the most exquisite auburn hair, falling over her shoulders in a cascade of silky softness. He often dreamed of what it would feel like to run his hands through it, letting his deft fingers gently massage her scalp.

Gods, she wasn't beautiful, she was a goddess. A goddess of perfection too pure for any mortal's affections. But along with her beauty, he also noticed the sadness in her eyes. Eyes so full of hidden pain and anguish. What else could he expect to see in their depths. She had lost everything in a single day. Her family, her village, everyone she ever cared for was brutally slaughtered in a single day. Oh how much he wished that he could dispel the darkness from within her, to make her truly happy again. His wretched fate paled in comparison to hers, and he found himself ashamed that he had wallowed in despair, when this poor girl had gone through pain, much greater than his. She had gotten the chance to know her family, to love them. His family had died as well, but it was such a long time ago, that the memory was dull in his mind, as well as the pain he felt. Looking into her eyes once again, he vowed that one day he would bring her happiness, but only after Naraku was dead, and his life was no longer in danger.

He again moved towards the woman, and she again edged away from him. Sighing in exasperation he said, "Come on Sango, if we're going to come up with a plan to allow Kagome-sama to leave undetected you have to let me talk to you."

"You don't need to be in my lap to talk to me Houshi-sama. I can hear you from here. Besides, I already have a plan of my own." She replied.

"What plan?" asked a voice from the darkness.

Both Sango and Miroku turned in surprise as they heard the voice behind them. Miroku pasted a cheery look on his face and turned toward the intruder. The man before him stood a little taller than Miroku, a scowl on his face, suspicious golden eyes trained on the woman before him. A slight breeze blew through the hut, causing his long silver hair to billow out behind him. His ears, normally twitching atop his head, were now turned in her direction, waiting for a response.

"Inuyasha my friend" Miroku called out cheerily. "What brings you here? I thought you were training with Kirara."

"Shut up monk." He replied. "Now what plan were you talking about Sango"?

"Oh, um uh… A-A plan to battle Naraku the next time we see him" she replied lamely.

But Inuyasha was not the most perceptive person in the world and he believed her, however he did notice an increase in her heart rate as she spoke about it.

"Oh, uh what sort of plan did you have in mind?" he asked.

Sango looked a bit panicked and she looked to Miroku and back to Inuyasha, racking her brains for a response.

"Y-yes of course, the plan. The plan, um uh well you see, that is-"

But she was saved as Miroku picked up where she left off.

"Well, you see Inuyasha, we haven't exactly determined the plan as of yet. Right now we're just brainstorming ideas."

"Brainstorming?" He asked with a blank look on his face.

"Yes. It's a word that Kagome-sama taught me-" He clapped his hand over his mouth however, when he recognized the slip he made, hoping that Inuyasha would not pick up on it.

"Speaking of Kagome, do you guys know where she is?" inquired Inuyasha nonchalantly.

'No such luck' Miroku thought dejectedly.

"Oh, Kagome-chan?" replied Sango nervously. "I think she went to take a bath in the hot springs."

"If that were the case, pervert here would not be here. He would be there spying on her. There's something you're not telling me, I can sense it."

He cautiously sniffed the air, searching for her scent. When he finally caught it his eyes narrowed in anger.

"Sango? If Kagome is at the hot springs, why do I detect her scent near the bone eater's well?"

But he didn't give her time to answer as he flew out the door, disappearing into the afternoon sun.

Sango smacked Miroku upside his head, causing him to fall over sideways.

"Ow, dear Sango. That hurt. Why would you do such a thing to me." He pouted from the floor.

"You just had to bring up Kagome-chan, didn't you Houshi. We were this close to stalling him, and you had to go and ruin it. Kagome-chan's going to be so mad at me."

"Well look at it this way Sango. We may have failed to stop Inuyasha from going after her, but now we get to watch as she sits him into the ground." He replied mischievously.

Sango grinned, and stood up. Suddenly a ball of fur attached itself to her face and a high-pitched voice was heard.

"I want to go too!" the fur ball wailed.

"Okay Shippo." Replied Miroku. "We shall all go watch Inuyasha make a fool out of himself."

"Yay!" cheered the little fox kit.

And with that they all exited the hut and began running in the direction of the well, Shippo riding on Miroku's shoulder.

Kagome continued her stealthy trek across the clearing. Every once and a while looking behind her for any signs of the hanyou. When she was just feet away from the well, she looked back once more, and scanned the forest for any signs of him. Letting out a relieved sigh, she turned back towards the well and almost cried out in shock at what she saw.

Inuyasha was leaning against the edge of the well, one leg lazily hung over the rim. A smirk graced his lips, and his intense gold eyes stared into her own, challenging her to take another step. She could have stared into those golden depths all day long, but now was not the time for such thoughts. She had a test to study for, and knew that she would get no peace as long as she stayed in the Sengoku-jidai.

She glared at his haughty expression, her hands on her slim waist, resting on her hips. Her head was cocked to the side, and a slight pout covered her beautiful face.

'Just once, I wanted to go home without the fight. I thought Sango-chan was going to stall him for me. Oh well. Maybe I can leave without having to sit him. I don't particularly like hurting the man I love, but he just deserves it so much of the time. Still, maybe this time will be different.'

"Oi, wench! Where do you think you're going? It's the middle of the day. That 'skool' of yours is already over." He demanded, never losing the smirk, or taking his eyes from hers.

'Gods, she's beautiful', he thought to himself. It was hard to be angry with her when she just looked so damn cute, standing there with that pout gracing her full lips.

He mentally kicked himself. 'What the hell was that? Did I just think she was beautiful? Well, I guess it can't hurt to admit to myself that she's beautiful. But I'll never tell her that. She would never want to be with a lowly half-breed anyway. She's just here to fix her mistake and collect the shards of the jewel she broke. Well, at least I get to be with her until it's completed. Best not to dwell on things of the future. I'll worry about that later.'

Inuyasha was so absorbed in his thoughts that he almost failed to catch what she said next. When he did hear it he became angry.

Looking into his eyes, she said simply, "Inuyasha, I'm not going to do this this time. I have to study for a test tomorrow and I'm not going to fight with you. Either you move or I say the word."

He looked back at her menacingly, and replied in a low voice, "You wouldn't dare."

She simply sighed, and continued, "Very well. Sit."

Three figures in the bushes collectively cringed as they saw Inuyasha's face slam into the ground.

"That was harsh." Replied Miroku.

"Yeah, she didn't even give him a chance." Shippo pouted. "It's no fun if they don't argue first."

"I agree Shippo." Answered Miroku. "Well, I guess there's nothing to do now. The good part's already over. Guess we better head back to Kaede's hut."

The three of them silently left the clearing, leaving the hanyou with his face in the dirt, his stream of curses muffled by the ground. When the spell finally wore off, he noticed that Kagome was gone already. He angrily got to his feet and walked to the well. Looking down into its depths, he was seething with pent up anger.

'How dare that wench' he thought bitterly. 'She didn't even give me the chance to respond. Well, if she thinks she can get off that easy, she's got another thing comin'. I'll make sure no studying is done on her part today. That'll show her for treating me like that.'

An evil glint in his eye, Inuyasha leapt over the edge of the well, and was instantly consumed in the familiar pink light.
