It was after almost 2 a.m. when Don Flack went to his apartment. The night was filled with activity from one place to the next. Multiple shootings, a carjacking, a robbery at a convenient store, and a homicide inside a posh hotel all in one night was too much to handle. Placing his keys on the counter, Don went to the fridge and looked for something to eat, but nothing appealed to him. He was exhausted and wanted to sleep, but he also wanted to release the tension he was feeling. Don looked on the table to see the bottle of wine that somebody gave him. He picked it up and looked at it.
He thought about taking a drink but pushed it away, alcohol was the last thing he needed after dealing with the beginning of a homicide investigation. Don then sat on the sofa and stared at the ceiling. His thoughts drifted not on the current case, but on someone he lost and cared for deeply. It was 6 months ago that Jessica Angell died, but it felt like yesterday. Don felt tears in his eyes, but he tried not to cry, it didn't help him feel any better.
The days after Jessica's death were the hardest and Don blamed himself because he couldn't save her. He felt more alone then he'd ever felt before.
" Why couldn't I save her? Why did it have to be her?"
Don got up and proceeded to the bedroom to get some sleep, but sleep didn't want to meet him.
" I miss you Jess. I loved you. I will always love you."
Don then laid down and shut his eyes, hoping sleep will meet him half way. Apparently sleep did come to him because when he woke up the next morning it was after 8 a.m. Don knew he had to go on because they are cases that needed his attention. No matter what he did though, Jessica will always be in his thoughts.
" I'll always be with you," he heard Jess's voice.
" You'll be forever in my heart Jess."
Don then left his apartment and went on with his day. For in his line of work, crime never seemed to sleep.
