A/N: This is a companion piece to Music, it has slightly the same concept, although this one is Brucas.

Disclaimer: I do not own One Tree Hill. I do, however, own this story.

I can't exactly recall, is Steinbeck the author that Lucas liked a lot in season one? Let me know, in case I'm wrong.

Books

The closest she ever got to books were the ones they used in school, and even then she barely read them. The only time she had ever been in a library was when they were dating. She'd follow him as he would search for book after book, and after he was through, she's skim through outdated issues of Seventeen and CosmoGirl as he'd wait patiently. She tried countless of times to read the books he read, but would end up lying to him about finishing them. He would laugh at her, as if he didn't believe her, but he didn't say anything else about it.

He would tell her endlessly that he liked their differences. He liked that she didn't read novels, or listen to Travis, or the fact that she was the vixen of the town and that he was the troubled outsider.

But if he liked their differences, then why did he sneak around with Peyton? They had so much in common, but he had said he enjoyed being different from Brooke, so she couldn't understand why he did it. Months have passed, and she's tried to move on, but she can't. Sure, she's got Felix, but he's just a poor substitute. Of course, he was attractive and good in bed and everything-but he was nothing compared to Lucas. She knows she's hurting Felix, although he doesn't know it, but she just can't help herself. Felix would go away eventually-Lucas would always be there.

Somehow, Brooke finds herself wandering through the dusty library for the first time in months. She forces herself to take some books for research, but deep down she knows what she's really doing there. She scans the shelves for a book, any book to take her mind off of him. She can't find one. Reluctantly, she walks over to the aisle where Lucas had introduced some books by that one author to her. What was that guy's name again? she wonders. She remembers. It takes her a while to find the right shelf, but finally she succeeds. Steinbeck. She removes a book from the shelf and heads toward the check-out counter. This time, Brooke knows she will finish reading it. She doesn't need to tell Lucas, but doing something that he had asked her to, even if it was a year ago, would put her mind at ease. Maybe it would help her, just a little, to move on. Maybe. Just maybe.
