Jane's Poem
Eyes like ponds green with algae in mid-July
It takes me away
Freckles like stars that encrust the sky
A sky with blonde hair and eyes as blue as your veins that course beneath your paper thin skin
It takes me away
To a time when saying "I love you" had no hidden meanings
When we fought with wooden swords because we didn't know the implications of death
And we promised away our forever because we didn't understand the breadth of our words
It takes me away to a time when we weren't afraid of anything
Because anything never happened to us
Because the world was never cruel then
So we had playdates with danger and flirted with death and each other
Buying courage with money we won gambling on hot summer nights by the fish pond
Courage that would last just long enough for you to ask for her name
"My, name," she said, "is Skye."
And joking, you asked, "Skye Blue?"
And she said, "It depends on the weather."
So you became an umbrella
In her summer thunderstorms, keeping her dry
In her droughts, shading her eyes
And it takes me away
It takes me away to a time when being lost was a good thing
When lost meant adventure
And kisses on park benches
And piano benches
And lost mean Tom Sawyer and Peter Pan under the covers with a flashlight
It takes me away, on a train that always takes me back
And now we bear the weight of loss and understand death
And now we do not feel so invincible
Spending hard-earned money on stability instead of courage
"Because it is a better investment," you say
But all I want is to fall apart in that lazy childhood summer with you
And it takes me away.
I am no poet. Thank you lovely people for your patience with me and these little Penderwick-themed ramblings. Applesandbananas-please get an account, if for no other reason, so I can PM you :)
