Patronus Thoughts

"What do you think about?"

"What was that, love?"

They were leaned against a wall, taking a moment for each other between classes. Sirius, Remus, and Peter were standing at the end of the hall, throwing wads of paper at the couple every once in awhile but otherwise giving them their space.

Lily clutched her Arithmency book to her chest. "Your patronus. When you cast it, what do you think of?"

"If I say you, how much will you hex me?"

"I'm being serious."

"So am I."

She sighed and glared up at him. "I'm not asking because I want an ego boost, James. I'm asking because I want to know."

He ran his hand through his hair and sighed, looking back at her wryly. "Can't we just snog in between classes like regular couples?"

She smiled warmly and shook her head. "No. Not today at least."

He raised his eyebrows up and down. "Tomorrow then?"

"Focus, Potter. Patronus."

He threw his hands up into the air. "Hell if I know, Lily!"

"Liar," she said, not unkindly. "Do you think of the boys?"

"Uh, yeah. And you sometimes, too, that's true." He was getting embarrassed, clamming up.

"What about the boys?"

"I—" he huffed and glared but she met his gaze evenly. She would not back down, and neither would he. "I don't know? Uh—fifth year. When we all first figured out how to, you know," he glanced around the hallway and lowered his voice, "help Remus. Sometimes I think of when we told him that he wouldn't have to go it alone so much anymore, that we had finally been successful. I just—think of Remus's face and how… how grateful he was, and how much… ah, Lily, stop making me do this." He rubbed the back of his neck, his face pink.

"How much what?" She tried not to smile at how uncomfortable he was, but she couldn't help it. Let the tables be turned for once; he always knew just how to make her blush.

"You sound like Professor McGonnagal trying to make me confess my crimes," James groaned. He slumped against the wall in frustration and looked up at her with an imploring look.

"Well you would be familiar with that." She leaned forward to tug on his hair slightly but pulled back before he could catch her hand and pull her to him. "And I'm actually fine with sounding like that… so, how much what, Mr. Potter?"

He grinned and stood back up, lowering his voice and taking a small step closer to her. "Call me that again."

She placed a firm hand on his chest. "Answer or I'll only ever call you, uh, Professor Slughorn."

"Uch, Lily!"

"Yes, Slugho—"

"Merlin, how much we all, y'know, love each other." He said is quickly and quietly. "Merlin and Morgana, I don't know why I put up with you sometimes."

"Yeah you do," Lily grinned, wrapping her arms around his waist.

He kissed the top of her head. "Well, remind me."

"Ha! Fat chance, Potter. I've got to get to class." She leaned up to kiss him on the nose and pulled her arms away from him, but not fast enough. James grabbed her hand and tugged her back towards him, placing a finger on her lips to keep her from protesting.

"You don't want to know what I think about you when I'm doing my Patronus?" James asked.

She grinned at him and kissed the finger on her lips. "Well, I figured it's just the same moments I think of."
