I walked her home
And when she opened up her door
I'm not sure what happened then
Guess magic took its course
-Toby Keith, Blame it on the Mistletoe
Carlton Lassiter never cared for this time of the year.
Newly single yet again, he had spent the last few weeks feeling sorry for himself. It was snowing outside as he aimlessly walked past dozens of decorated storefronts. People were bustling about, buying last-minute Christmas gifts and exchanging pleasantries with one another. Children were throwing snowballs at each other as their mothers watched them intently. He let out a soft sigh. Maybe a family of his own was simply out of the question for him.
Up ahead, a slender blond stepped out of one of the stores, her arms heavy with packages. She took a step and began to slide, and without thinking Lassiter sprinted over and caught her, keeping her from falling to the concrete. "Are you-"
Juliet smiled up at him, her beautiful blue eyes sparkling. "Carlton!"
Automatically he released her and stepped back a little. "Sorry."
"Don't be sorry. You saved me from a nasty spill. Thanks."
He gave a small shake of his head. "It was nothing."
"Not to me." She straightened up and adjusted her packages. "What are you doing out?"
"Ah…Window shopping." Lies.
"Oh! I just finished my shopping. I think I have everyone covered." She graced him with another dazzling smile. "Including you."
"Me? O'Hara…"
"Juliet."
"O'Hara, I don't require a Christmas present."
"No one requires a present, Carlton."
"Hmm."
She began walking and he followed alongside her without a second thought. Snow was falling gently around them, catching in her shimmering gold locks.
They continued to make small talk and before they realized it, they were standing in front of Juliet's door. Lassiter held a package for her, allowing her to find her keys and unlock the door.
"Well, this was nice, Carlton."
"Yes, it was." Now it was time for him to go back to his empty apartment and finish the bottle of whiskey he had left on the coffee table.
She took the package from him and set them down just inside the door. Then she smiled up at Lassiter. "Do you want to come in for coffee?"
"I don't know…"
"I'm not taking no for an answer."
She looked stern and sweet at the same time, and he wasn't sure what possessed him, but the next thing he knew he leaned over and kissed her lips softly.
Startled, Juliet froze. But when he started to pull away, she leaned in and deepened the kiss.
Surprised and silently thrilled, Lassiter closed his eyes and rested a hand on her hip.
The kiss went on for a sweet eternity until Juliet reluctantly pulled away. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes glowed.
"Will you come inside now?"
Lassiter nodded and rested his forehead against hers.
"I think I will."

The next morning, Lassiter awoke warm and content. To his amazement, Juliet was sleeping in his arms, her hair messy and her leg draped over his, anchoring him in place.
As if he would ever leave. He chuckled softly and laid his head back down, listening to the Christmas music that played softly from the living room.
This was the greatest Christmas gift he ever could have hoped for.
Blame it on the mistletoe
Cause what happened here, nobody knows
How could something simple as a kiss
Change my holidays like this?
Then we held each other all night long
And we fell asleep to a Christmas song
Playing on the radio
Blame it on the mistletoe
The End.
