Under the surface
The sound of the shot still rings in her head. It's been there for a while now and she has no idea how to get rid of it. She was trained to block out things like out of her mind, but sometimes there are those, which you just cannot forget and this incident is one, which she will never forget. After all making this decision has changed her life irrevocably.
She had known about the mission that was underway, and she was in charge of him, but she had never imagined he would take the life of an innocent NCIS agent. Ari was getting out of control and there was only one way to stop him. She saw the way Agent Todd's team had suffered in the hours they had been hunting Ari down and she knew the leader of the team would settle for nothing less than the death of this 'damn terrorist'.
Ultimately, it boiled down to either Gibbs getting killed or Ari and she knew which one she wanted dead, but it looked like fate was not on her side and she had gone with her 'gut feeling' as Special Agent Gibbs had put it and put her total faith and trust in the old marine.
She had taken the decision to turn her back on her brother and her father, who she knew would not be pleased when he heard the true version of what had really transpired in Special Agent Gibbs's basement.
How could she ever defend her actions of killing her own brother, her own flesh and blood? Had Ari been in her place, would he have agreed to Gibbs's suggestion and killed her? Or would he have used every method and means possible to save his sister's life? That was the question that ran through her mind every night when she battled to fall asleep.
Did the end really justify the means, in this case?
Sure Ari had his flaws but then so did she and for the most part, they were on the same side. They had been trained together. How had she managed to make the decision to kill him so easily? She knew she was no push over and yet Gibbs had gained her trust and she had done what he had asked her to…
"No the end did not justify the means…" she decided. And besides, if she put agencies and countries aside Ari was her brother and there was no way she should have killed him. She was supposed to protect him at all cost, as he was all she had and yet she had ripped out the one person she had loved the most in the entire world.
It didn't matter that at the present moment they were on different sides, but she had broken his trust and fraternized with the enemy and that was what she had to live with for the rest of her life. She was not sure she would ever recover from it, but hell, she was not sure she even wanted to. The pain that resulted from recalling the incident was the only reminder of just how much she missed her brother…
None of them would understand… all they saw was a terrorist who had killed a fellow agent of their's and all they wanted was revenge… they did not bother to look under the surface...
