The Places we have come to Fear the Most
There is a monster that exists that no one may overcome, no one may best. It lurks in the least and the most likely of places equally, pouncing on those who are aware and unaware alike; it is not picky when choosing its victims. Only those who choose to give up their sanity may ever hope to defeat this juggernaut and even then only a handful manage the feat. As much as it is rare that you escape with your life once you have been marked as prey, it is still rarer that one manages to maintain your mind. It is indeed an extraordinary accomplishment, and a young lady, a mere girl cannot possibly hope to be one of these people, one of these few. True, it does not take a hero in the traditional sense; no amount of muscle can hope to outdo this foe, but cunning just may. Intelligence is the key. A cold cutting ability to rationalize everything you take in and to compartmentalize until a solution presents itself. I have none of this ability. I cannot possibly reason out how to beat this foe, and thus I cannot hope to ever overcome it with body or mind. Yet it pursues me and those around me mercilessly and ceaselessly. It lingers around corners and slides as we pass, slippery and slick through our consciousness infecting us and disparaging our minds until we cannot function and until we have no hope of success. We are lost to it. Prey to it. At the mercy of it. We suffer for it. We hurt for it. And in some sense we even live for it.
Pain is what this wicked rival is branded and it is what we have come to fear. The name may be short; a measly four letters. But in it is stored the potential for such great and completely overwhelming torment and for agony unlike any other feeling on earth. It has no corporeal form, yet we feel it as it enters us, feel as it gently penetrates and then blooms reining its terror across our minds and bodies incapacitating us and forcing us to submit without hope or a chance to be free. It radiates inside of us, marking its territory and slowly, oh so achingly slowly capturing our very beings without the intent of ever returning them to our control. It is exquisitely done with the air of something that has been honed and perfected over an eternity. And it has, which makes it so much more dangerous.
One might conclude then that such an extraordinary feeling, such a sinister sensation, must be caused by another catastrophe of equal proportion. Somehow though, this doesn't always seem the case. Sometimes the littlest of actions, the most meager of mistakes can cause an onslaught of such great peril that those who it consumes may never again be the same. So then, when I was exposed to this horrid existence, I had about thirty seconds in which to reflect, what caused this? And I realized. It was something so simple, it was almost humorous. Such a plain, ordinary, mundane white envelope. Nothing more, yet somehow nothing less than that which would cause me to have these thoughts, that which would cause the end of the world and all I had ever known.
