Deep breaths, she told herself just keep breathing and you'll make it just fine. It was her first day at Reefside High School and Max was on edge despite her calm and indifferent exterior. After bailing on her last bad foster situation with Lucy and her drunkard dad, Max had been reluctant to say the least to go back into foster care. However, after realizing how hard it was living as a kid on the streets genetically revved up or not, she had decided it was in her best interests to be under the protection of human adults again.
Max looked up at the massive brick building and inwardly cringed, she did not relish the thought of being trapped inside a facility like that all day. Not like she couldn't ditch if she wanted to, they certainly couldn't keep her in, but she was trying so hard to blend in and act like a normal kid she would just have to endure it. In fact, she thought wryly to herself all it was missing were some drill sergeants and a barbed wire fence equipped with guard stations and snipers for it to feel just like Manticore.
Grumbling under her breath, she headed to the main office to register and get her books and schedule. "Hi, I'm Kira Ford," she told the aging woman at the front desk, who continued to stare at her confusedly, "I'm new."
"Oh, of course, of course," the small woman hurried to print out her information on the ancient computer. "Here you are dear; this is your schedule and your locker and combination, you'll need to get books from your teachers as you go. Have a nice day!"
It had been hard for her at first to part with her name, the name her unit, her family had given her, but in the end she knew it would have been a tactical error to keep her Manticore name, and she could not simply ignore her training. So she had told the agency that she could not remember her name and taken the one her recently adopted mother had given her.
Max walked down the hallway to her first class of the day, Science with Doctor Oliver, silently cursing, she hated doctors. Her eyes constantly scouted her surroundings for any possible threat. She found none, but the instructor himself, no matter how hard he tried to hide it, seemed to hold a hidden strength that would have gone unnoticed by the casual observer. The rest of the day continued on in a similar fashion, she mostly spent her time making notes in her head of what she noticed of her fellow students and her teachers. It wasn't like she actually had to pay attention she had learned most of this junk at the age of five and had a photographic memory for the rest.
By the time the final bell had rung Max was seriously considering never coming back to this place. Her heart sank when she realized that it was not over yet, she still had to serve her detention, which she had acquired at lunch break after decking some horny boy who wouldn't get the message that she wasn't interested. As it turned out, she and two other boys had all managed to land themselves detentions on the first day of classes and their jailer was to be one Doctor Thomas Oliver.
"So... you guys like museums?"
Sooo umm yeah this is my first story ever and I don't exactly know if anyone will want to read it but hey, why not right? But anyway any critique is welcome, I know it's short, but I've never really been much of a writer so mabe more later on. Thanks!
Ooh and anyone know how to get this stupid program to indent cause it's driving me crazy??
