Cake
"No! Dude, you'll ruin the whole thing!"
"Connor, I'm doing my best."
"I appreciate that, Becker but it's not good enough."
Becker nodded and sighed. "I'm a soldier. I'm not cut out for this sort of thing. I should just give up." He threw up his hands, and began to walk out.
"No, Mate," said Matt, grabbing his arm. "You can do this."
"Absolutely," said Connor. "Try again."
"I don't know..."
Matt smiled, putting his arm around the Captain. He said, "Just think about what it is you want to achieve."
Connor nodded. "Yeah, think about...ahem...you know who." He smirked.
Becker shook his head. "Why in the world did I ask you to two to help?'"
"Because as a leader of men you're extraordinary," said Matt.
"But you suck at cake making. Do you want to make Jess' birthday cake yourself or not?"
"I want to do it," said Becker. "It would help if two would wipe those stupid grins off your faces."
Matt laughed. "Sorry."
"Me too. Now, let's start again," said Connor. "Hold the egg gently in your hand, and flip your wrist up and...the egg yolk comes out, no shells in the batter."
Becker tried again.
"Hey! No shells in the batter this time!" cried Connor happily.
"And no yellow runny mess all over your hand. Impressive."
"Why do I feel like you are both enjoying my incompetence?"
"Because we are," said Connor. "OK, now try mixing it all again, but this time keep the beaters inside the bowl. Seriously man, how did you manage without me?"
"The military's idea of creaming is a bit different than the culinary definition," said Matt.
Becker nodded. "Yeah. I've whipped, creamed, and pulverized a lot in my career, but never with an electric mixer."
Several hours, two more tries, and lots of ruined ingredients later, Jess was called to the break room. She walked in and found a simple pink cake sitting on the table. It said "Happy Birthday Jess."
She squealed. Hearing laughter behind her, she turned and saw Becker.
"Don't get too excited; you may get a surprise gift with this cake: food poisoning."
She giggled. "You made it?"
"Yeah. One of my dumber ideas. I hope I don't accidentally kill us both with it."
She giggled again and ran into his arms. "Thank you! It was so sweet of you! Is it chocolate?"
He laughed. "What do you think?"
She giggled again. "Aw...Becker," she said. Then she blushed and leaned up to gently kiss his lips. He smiled and kissed her with a little more force.
It was several minutes before they actually ate the cake. Their mouths were preoccupied.
Spying on their colleagues from a distance, Matt shook his head. "I didn't think they'd actually get that far."
Connor smiled. "Mission accomplished, thanks to my little known pastry chef skills."
"You're the man, Conn."
"Oh, I know it Matt, but thanks."
Matt laughed, and watched Becker and Jess flirt and feed each other cake.
"Don't look now," said Jess to Becker, "but we have an audience."
Becker chuckled. "I don't hear or see anyone else, Jess."
She giggled.
"Happy birthday," he whispered.
The End and Happy Birthday
