Why am I a cop? That's the question I'm asked all the time – by kindergarteners on career day, by reporters after a particularly tough case, even by you, when I wake up with a nightmare. When you hold me, and as you soothe my tears, you whisper, almost as if to a higher power, "Why do you do it, baby?"
But as I sit in the hospital delivery room with you, holding our beautiful baby girl for the first time, I finally have an answer to that question. So I can make the world a safer place for our daughter. So by the time she's out on her own, I won't have to worry about the millions of perps who are out there with her. So I can pick them off, one monster at a time. So I can preemptively protect our little girl. Because Anastasia Serena Benson-Cabot is worth fighting for.
