Blushing Beside You

By Kirra Myrtus

Moonlit nights surely are the best. Of course, from my room in Maka's apartment, it can sometimes be a bit difficult to see. Tonight, however, is different; the entire moon is visible. As I sit on the edge of my bed, I can see the moon's light flooding into the room. Medusa loved the moon, and for that exact reason, I used to despise it. But Maka told me that I'm my own person, and therefore can make my own decisions about what to like and dislike. Tonight, the moon has never been more beautiful.

I hear a knock on the door. "Hey Crona, you in there?" I recognize it as Maka's voice.

"Come in." I whisper. The door creaks a bit as Maka enters, but it closes before too much noise is made.

"Sorry, just… I couldn't sleep." She sat on the edge of the bed beside me.

"It's ok, you didn't wake me." My chest stiffens as I feel Maka's knee against mine. A long silence ensues.

"The moon sure is beautiful tonight…" Maka's voice barely rises above a whisper. She moves to the window, opening the latch, and a cool breeze floats its way into the room. I watch as Maka stands calmly by the window. I can only see her silhouette, but I can tell she's thinking about something.

"A penny for your thoughts?" I'd heard that expression plenty of times before and decided to give it a try. Maka didn't answer for a moment, pondering her reply.

"It's just… so beautiful…" This is all her response consists of. I get up to join her, but she turns around. "Crona, do you want to go on a walk with me?" Maka asks. I nod silently, admiring the smile Maka beams at me in return. She walks towards me, linking her arm in mine, and we walk down the stairs together. After we open and shut the front door, she and I walk together along the streets of Death City.

Most silences are awkward, but not this one. This kind of silence is soothing and comforting, the kind of feeling I get whenever I'm with Maka. She was the first one to accept me for me, the first one to become my friend, the first one to-

"Crona?" Maka's voice interrupts my thoughts. I turn around to realize that Maka was a few feet behind me. "Can we go this way?"

"Of course!" With Maka leading the way, we turn into a grassy field. She walks to the middle, then lies down. I join her. "The stars are really pretty…"

"Yeah." Maka whispers, taking my hand in hers. She feels warm. And as I look at her face in the grass, I realize that I feel warm too.
