Prologue to Forever Haunt Me

A flash of lighting lit up the darkened sky and the fields outside of Hogwarts. The cold ground was drenched in crimson blood. Bodies twisted in pain on the ground, many of them in the brief spot just before the wonderful peace of death. Only one person, Hermione Granger, had the strength to speak. Her voice cracked in grief and her face was marked with remnants of past tears and dried blood. Her pale hand lovingly stroked the face of her dying lover. Her crimson robes swept around them, protecting them from the harsh wind. Her lover's face was partially veiled by his long black hair. Not wanting to leave her just yet, his deathly-white hand clung to her shoulder. She held his body to hers, his blood drenching her clothes. His body was cold and clammy and his eyes were empty of feeling and life.

"No," she whispered hoarsely, "Not yet… Don't leave me all alone…" Her voice faded off as she collapsed into dry sobs. But she had no more tears to cry for they had been dried up long ago. She slowly glanced around the dismal battlefield, not wanting to face the horrors of the war. In sorrow, she saw the limp bodies of her beloved friends and mentors. They had fought long and hard for many horrific days and sleepless nights. Harry Potters body lay limp as a rag doll next to the remains of Lord Voldemort's snake-like body.

Amazingly, they had fought a lengthy duel. They gruelingly dodge curses for hours and hours, but their duel came to a sudden dreadful halt. A bright green light had lit up everything around it in a sickly pale glow. Everything seemed to be suspended in time as both duelers fell to the ground, hit simultaneously by each other's spells. That was near the end though and barely anyone was left to witness this horrible act.

Hermione moved her encumbered gaze on to see the fragile body of her headmaster lying on the ground. He had been struck down by many curses, but he stood up again to defend the life of Harry. He was finally brought down by the most unforgivable of the Unforgiveables. His eyes had a serene happiness in them that had not been there since before the war.

"Why did I have to do this," she cried out in vain. "Why did I have to go and be so stupid… I'm still a stupid little girl. I always was and I'll never change…" She let her body collapse over her now dead lover's body. Her heart felt as though someone had ripped it out and torn it apart while it was still beating. She was the only one left… There was no one left to help her go on… He was gone, never to return. "Why did I have to end up being everything you ever hated, Severus?"
