Thank You Notes

By Rekahneko

It was winter break and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was almost empty. In particular, it seemed as if almost every Gryffindor had gone home for the break. The only exceptions were two young girls, first and second years, and two sixth year boys, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin.

"Hey, Moony, what'cha doin'?"

"Writing thank you notes, Sirius."

"But it's Christmas Eve! Let's go play in the snow! There is a Ravenclaw staying over break that I've been aching to pelt in the head with a snowball."

"I received three gifts already, Padfoot. I don't want to get behind on my thank yous."

"Moooooony, no one writes thank you notes anymore. It's old fashioned. Come on outside with me."

"They might be old fashioned, but I think people appreciate them."

"There are other ways to thank someone for a present, Moony."

"Are there, Sirius? I hadn't realized." Remus grinned.

"For instance," his dark haired friend continued, "a thank you snow fort, or a thank you snowman, or a thank you snow angel, or a…"

"Yes, I think I see where you are headed with this, Padfoot. But those melt and thank you notes don't."

"Moony, people don't keep thank you notes forever," Sirius stated firmly, consciously not thinking about the careful stack of notes he had collected from Remus over the years, stashed away at the bottom of his trunk.

"Still, Sirius, I think I will stick to parchment instead of snow."

"You are such a traditionalist. So let's have a traditional Christmas Eve snowball fight!"

Remus laughed. "You aren't going to let up, are you?"

"Nope."

"I suppose the letters can wait until tomorrow. Just let me get my coat and boots."

The next morning the two awoke to piles of presents and loads of holiday cheer. The two Gryffindor boys opened each present, pausing now and again to eat a bit of Christmas candy. After all the unwrapping had been done and the initial excitement had worn off, the two made their way down to the common room to relax in front of the fire.

"Thanks for the broom care kit, Moony. Now I don't have to borrow James' all the time. So he probably thanks you too!"

"You are very welcome, Padfoot. How did you know I wanted a copy of Dark Curses and How to Break Them, An Unabridged History?"

"You drool over it every time we are off to Hogsmede, Remus. In fact, they had to order a special copy that wasn't soggy."

Remus chuckled and there was a moment of content silence as they considered the gifts around them.

"You know I don't write thank you notes, Remus," Sirius offered, half apologetically.

"I know. I don't expect one. It's all right."

"I have better ways to thank someone, Moony."

"Oh! Shall I be looking forward to a thank you snowman then?" Remus teased.

"Actually I was thinking of something even better than that," Sirius replied, a bit nervously.

"Better than a snowman?" Remus smiled gently.

"I hope so…" Sirius leaned in and kissed a very surprised Remus.

When Sirius pulled back to see his classmate's reaction, Remus blinked, eyes wide. His mouth opened as if to say something, then closed again.

All of a sudden, Remus jumped up and dashed away.

'Shoot,' Sirius thought, 'That was not quite what I had been hoping for. What was I thinking?'

A moment later, and thankfully before Sirius had descended into full blown panic mode, Remus was back, holding something gingerly.

Remus pressed a package of chocolate frogs into his friend's hand.

Sirius looked up at his friend, confused.

"Happy Christmas, Sirius, here is another present." The blond boy grinned. "Do I get another thank you?"

As Remus leaned in for another kiss, he realized that, sure enough, Sirius was correct; there were better ways of saying thank you.
