Part one Mikey comes home
Tuesday
5 April 2005
Roberts' Residence
Mikey Roberts was home from the academy for the week. It was spring vacation. Mikey was in love once again. This time it was with a fiery little spitfire name Cameron Creswell, known as Cammy to her love ones.
She was the one, the one he was going to spend the rest of his life with or so he believed. She was special. He had never met someone like her before. She was beautiful and very intelligent. He needed to talk to Bud about how to declare his love to her and make her his wife.
"What's wrong Mikey?" asked Harriet. He looked so sad to her."He says he's in love. Where have we heard that before?" chuckled Bud as he gave Harriet a 'I don't believe it look.'"It's true, this time. She's the most beautiful and intelligent woman I have ever met." Mikey informed them with a touch of defiance in his voice."You say that every time you meet someone new Mikey. Who is it this time, some little barmaid in the local watering hole off academy grounds?" chuckled Bud. He was almost laughing now at his brother's act."No ... she's a first year cadet. She's five feet two with long brown hair and a smile that lights up the sky." sighed Mikey with a dreamy look on his face."He must be in love." laughed Harriet as Bud gave her a look that said don't encourage him."Please be serious Harriet. Last year it was his room mate's sister. The year before it was Gunny's sister. The year before that it was a Jenny Coates. He doesn't know what love is Harriet." exclaimed Bud."I do too! I can't help it if the woman I love doesn't stay around. It's different this time. She's attending the naval academy. She isn't going anywhere." argued Mikey
"Who is this girl Mikey?" asked Harriet. She didn't like to see Mikey feeling like a heel.
"Her name is Cameron Creswell. She likes to be called Cammy." replied Mikey."Are you crazy! She's the General's daughter! Are you trying to ruin my career and yours before you even get started?" yelled Bud in disbelief. He couldn't believe that Mikey continued to partake in stupidity. "Come on Bud, the General isn't going to hold you responsible to who his daughter is in love with." replied Mikey in disbelief. He was here to talk about his love life, but somehow Bud had made it about him as usual."You don't know the General. He believes I have anger issues. He doesn't want his daughter to be dating anyone Mikey. That's why she is attending the academy. There is no dating allow." argued Bud."I heard from the Colonel that she might not even stay at the academy. She doesn't like all the discipline." added Harriet."If he knows that you are dating his daughter, he will check you out. He will find out about your screw ups. He will know that you are my brother. The shit will hit the fan and end up in my face." explained Bud.
Mikey was despondent. He had come here looking for some encouragement, instead all he found was the opposite. Bud and Harriet were trying to discourage him. He was beginning to feel that he would never find love and be happy like Bud and Harriet.
Second Scene Mikey and Harm talk
Wednesday
6 April 2005
Jag Headquarters
Harm was sitting outside at one of the benches enjoying a hot cup of coffee. He had been thinking about Mac more and more everyday. He kept wondering why he and Mac weren't together.
He wondered why he hadn't told her how he really felt. What was he afraid of? He knew she had feelings for him. She was so close, yet so far away. Their relationship as it was now wasn't enough anymore.
He loved her. He wanted more. He wanted to be with her everyday. He wanted to go home with her every night. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He was brought out of his thoughts when he saw Mikey moving his way.
"What's up Mike? Take a seat, talk to me." ordered Harm."Thank you Sir." replied Mikey as he sat down opposite to Harm."So what's the matter Mike. You seem despondent." asked Harm."I'm in love and Bud just laughs at me." replied Mikey."What does Bud know about love Mike? He would still be single if Mac and I didn't help him. Harriet was the one who took the initiative. Bud screwed up so many times." smiled Harm remembering back to when life was simple."Maybe, but he happily married now. He has a great wife and wonderful family. What do I have?" wailed Mikey."It's not that bad Mike. Have you told this girl how you feel?" asked Harm."No, not yet. I've been trying to sort out my feelings. I think I love her." replied Mikey.
"How does she feel about you Mike?" asked Harm."I think she likes me. She always teases me whenever we're together. She always gives me this beautiful smile. You know, like the one the Colonel gives you whenever she sees you." sighed Mikey.
"Yeah, that is a special smile. I always feel pretty good when I see her smile." agreed Harm."So what should I do Sir?" asked Mikey."I think you should tell her how you feel before it's too late. If you love her, you should tell her." directed Harm.
"Thank you Sir." replied Mikey. For the first time in days he felt happy. He felt hopeful.
Harm smiled as Mikey walked away. Young love he thought. He shook his head. It was time that he took some action too. It was time that he told Sarah that he loved her and wanted to be with her. It was time to ask her to marry him.
Third Scene The General lays down the law
Friday
8 April 2005
The General was a little agitated. His daughter Cammy was acting out again. He had received a report from one of the instructors at the Academy that he knew, he told him that Cammy wasn't playing by the rules. She was blatantly cheating.
He needed to find out why this was happening and the person who was responsible. He had asked Colonel MacKenzie to talk with her after she told him that she didn't want a career in the military, especially with the Marines.
The Colonel had a good talk with her. She had explained that the military was a very good career option for women. One's chances for movement up the command structure was better in the military than in civilian life.
There was no one to hold corporate big wigs accountable for not promoting women into leadership position. Where as in the military they were always looking for bright young women to lead.
He was surprised to hear that a boy was at the middle of her rebellion. He was a young man by the name of Mike Roberts. He buzzed Coates on the intercom.
"Yes Sir?" answered Jen.
"Get me the records of a Mike Roberts. He's currently attending the Naval Academy." ordered the General.
"Yes Sir." replied Jen.
It took most of the day before she received the records from the Academy. Jen wondered what the General wanted Mikey's records for. She wondered what he had done wrong this time. She buzzed the General's office.
"I have Cadet Roberts's records Sir." informed Jen."Bring them in Please." ordered the General."Yes Sir." Jen replied."Do you happen to know this Cadet, Coates?" asked the General."Yes Sir. He's Lieutenant Commander Roberts's younger brother Sir." replied Jen.
"What can you tell me about him Coates." asked the General."He's not a bad person Sir. He's a bit of a hound dog. It seems like he falls in love with some young lady every year." replied Jen."You included?" asked the General."Yes Sir, he was interested in me about three years ago, but I wasn't interested in him." replied Jen.
"Has he been in trouble Coates?" asked the General."I believe so Sir. I'm aware of three incidents Sir, but nothing came from any of them." replied Jen."Very well Coates, dismiss." ordered the General.
He spent the next hour reading Mikey's file. To say he wasn't please with what he read was an understatement. He couldn't believe that Roberts had gotten into the Academy. He was a disgrace to the uniform.
He almost killed a boatload of marines on maneuvers.
He got drunk, propositioned a prostitute, and killed her lover.
He was involved with a student accused of plagiarism.
He was involved in the death of a fellow cadet in a yachting race.
Roberts is 25, Cammy is only 18.
Why was he messing around with someone so much younger than he was? Was he that socially inept that he's hitting on women much younger than he is? Don't they give him enough to do to keep him busy? I thought there wasn't supposed to be any fraternization at the Academy.
Why was he even in the Navy? It must have something to his connections with the former JAG. He seemed to let his people get away with many indiscretions over the years.
"Coates! Get Roberts in here!" ordered the General.
Jen sighed as she got up to look for Bud. The shit was about to hit the fan. The General was very angry and she was sure she knew why. She had heard the rumors. Mikey was in love with the General's daughter.
Jen walked over to Bud's office and knocked on the door. She went inside when Bud said "Enter."
"What is it Jen?" asked Bud."The General wants to see you Sir." replied Jen."Do you know what he wants?" asked Bud.
"If I had to guess Sir, it has something to do with your brother." replied Jen.
"I told him not to mess around with the General's daughter." moaned Bud.
He got up out of his chair and slowly walked to the General's office. He knew his six was going to get reamed. Why couldn't Mikey for once in his life think about what he was doing instead of just reacting? He knocked on the door and upon the command "Enter!" walked into the General's office.
"Take a seat Commander. Can you explain to me what is wrong with your brother? His file is full of bad decision making." the General asked Bud."Sir? What has he done now?" asked Bud feigning ignorance."Don't play dumb with me Commander, I wasn't born yesterday." the General bellowed.
"He almost killed a squad of marines in a warfare exercise, he was accused of killing a prostitute's boyfriend, he was involved in a plagiarism scandal, and he obstructed the investigation of a cadet's death. I sense a disturbing pattern here Commander.""He was cleared of all those charges Sir." replied Bud weakly."That's not the point Commander. The fact that he was involved period is disturbing. He has consistently shown poor judgement ever since he joined the Navy. I don't understand how he was accepted at the academy. He's not worthy." bellowed the General.
"Yes Sir." replied Bud. He realized that it made little sense in arguing with the General.
He had advanced in his career by aligning himself with the important people at Jag. He had shown them respect, was willing to learn from his mentors, and he tried to anticipate their needs and have the information they wanted before they ask.
He had been rewarded first by Mikey getting into Academy. Then his mentors and the Admiral went to bat for him after he lost his leg so he could stay in the Navy. Finally he got promoted to Lieutenant Commander by the Admiral. He would continue to do what was necessary for his career.
"If that isn't bad enough Commander, he's looking to get involve with an underclassman. He's not at the academy to date women. It's called fraternization Commander." the General continued.
"Yes Sir." replied Bud.
"He's twenty five years old. He's much too old to be getting involved with a teenager Commander." the General concluded.
"Yes Sir." replied Bud.
Fourth Scene
Later that afternoon Mikey was asked to report to the General. He had been brief by Bud about what the General wanted to see him about. He wondered why the world was against him. What had he done wrong in his life to warrant such bad karma?
Why couldn't he be happy like his brother? Bud had it made. He had a great career. He had a wonderful wife and four kids. He had people who went to bat for him and supported his career. Why couldn't he have the same?
"Cadet Roberts reporting as ordered Sir!" reported Mikey as he stood at attention in front of the General's desk."Just what makes you think that you're worthy of dating my daughter, Cadet!" bellowed the General."Nothing Sir!" replied Mikey. Bud had told him not to argue with the General. Just say 'Yes Sir!'"I have talked with your superiors at the Academy. You won't be seeing Cameron. If you see her coming your way, you will turn around and walk the other way. You will not talk to her." the General instructed Mikey."Yes Sir!" replied Mikey disappointedly. He loved her, why couldn't he be happy?"Since you seem to have so much free time and can't occupy yourself constructively, you will be assigned extra duty for the next two years."
"Yes Sir!" replied Mikey dejectedly. It was bad enough that he couldn't see Cammy, but why should he be punished for loving her?"I have people at the Academy that will be watching you Cadet. You will not be dating or fantasying about women. If you don't shape up and keep your nose to the grindstone, your first duty assignment will be Rejevik, Iceland." "Yes Sir!" replied a despondent Mikey. Life was going to be hell for the next two years.
The End
