It's Not Right

Summary: What is Destiny's reaction to Matthew dying and what does Matthew think about the child that he is leaving behind?

A small drabble

Destiny was with Shaun, Vivian, and her mom and dad when she got the news. When the phone had rang, they'd all been shocked. It was Thanksgiving. Who could possibly be calling them? She'd ran to get it, still laughing at some sort of joke that Shaun and Vivian had just told.

Nora's voice had been on the other end. Even through the phone, Destiny could tell that something was wrong. Nora's voice sounded all choked up. She could barely understand a word that the other woman was saying. Or maybe she just wished that she hadn't understood.

Matthew Buchanan was dead. Her best friend was dead, her baby's father was dead. It just wasn't right. What had Matthew done to deserve such a fate? What had his family done? And most of all, why did her and Matthew's child deserve to grow up fatherless? And the truth of who pushed Matthew, who caused Matthew to get the brain injury was going to go to the grave with the teenage boy. Nate Salinger had litterally gotten away with murder. How was that even remotely fair?

Her hand went to her stomach when she felt her baby kick. She closed her eyes and slid down to the floor, tears spilling down her cheeks. This baby was honestly all that she and Nora and Bo were going to have left of Matthew. Destiny was going to make sure that Matthew's legacy lived on. She would make sure that her child knew all about his or her father. She would not let him be forgotten. He would not become a distant memory and he would not be erased. He would live on.

It wasn't fair. It just wasn't fair. He should be down there on Earth. He should be with his family. He should be celebrating Thanksgiving with them. He should be with Destiny, feeling their baby kick. He should be alive so that he could get to know his son or daughter and they could get to know him. There were alot of things that should've happened, that just hadn't.

Dying was a part of life and Matthew had always thought that he would be okay with that. He would die when he was supposed to. But now he couldn't help but curse the fates. He had so much life left to live. He wasn't going to get to watch his kid grow up or marry Destiny. Everything that he had wanted in his life for himself had been smashed to smitherings and he hated it.

He watched Destiny from up in the Heavens with his grandfather, Asa, as the girl that he loved fell to the floor in tears. He felt tears sting her own eyes as he saw her gently caress her stomach and whisper things to their little baby. He wished more than anything that he could be down there, that this was just a crazy dream while he was in his coma, one that would startle him awake. But life wasn't fair and things never worked out the way that you wanted. Not in the Buchanan's world.

The End

Next Chapter of "Forgiveness is the First Step" should be posted sometime this weekend. I just had to write this little drabble, though. I hated how they ended Matthew's life. I hated how we didn't even get Matthew's thoughts on Destiny having his child, too.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
