The Winding Road

Chapter One

It lasted longer. The second kiss. It was more passionate. It was longer. It was….nice. A million thoughts and worries flew around Abby's mind while they were kissing. What now? Is this a mistake? What happens if we break up? Does he love me still? And if he did, did he know she loved him back? Ten seconds later, after what seemed like forever Carter slowly removed his tongue from her mouth and pulled away just enough to see her face, and more importantly, her reaction.

She smiled. He smiled. It was alright. All those times he'd held back, wanting to kiss her so much but never letting his emotions get the better of him. This time he gave in, and thank god it was right. She didn't seem to mind, she actually seemed to enjoy it.

"So…." Abby said looking down as she lifted her eyebrows up when she was embarrassed and surprised at the same time.

"I'm sorry." Carter suddenly came out with.

"Sorry? For what?" She said quickly.

"For kissing you."

"You are?"

"No. Only if you are."

"Well I'm not. Just….surprised I guess."

"Good surprised? Or bad?"

She didn't answer. She looked up and stared into his eyes, deep into those dark mysterious eyes that seemed like they were filled with his soul.

"Abby?"

She didn't answer again. A smile slowly spread across her face and she turned a shade of red and a small giggle escaped her mouth. It was a good surprised.

"I take it that's a good surprised then?"

She leaned forward and kissed him. She kissed him. Not he kissed her. He was so overwhelmed. He never thought this would ever happen, although he had to admit he had dreamt it plenty of times. He answered her kiss and reciprocated gladly. They spent minutes just softly kissing, for all the time they had wanted to kiss, but hadn't.

Suddenly there was a loud banging on the door and the two jumped away from each other as if they were breaking the rules. It was Gallant. Thank god, it wouldn't be round the ER in seconds.

"Dr Carter, Abby. I'm sorry to….interrupt. We've had confirmation. You just need the jab and you can go."

"Thanks Gallant." Carter answered while Abby stared at the floor trying to stop the smile spread across her face even more.

Gallant walked away smiling and Carter looked back at Abby who was trying desperately not to laugh.

"Well at least it wasn't Chuny!"

"How do you know Gallant's not gonna spread it?!"

"I just know these things."

"Oh really. We'll see."

He smirked and turned to smooth out the covers on the gurney.

"Come on Romeo we got a jab to get."

"Yes my Juliet!"

He swiftly followed her out the room and smiled to himself as he tried to keep up with her as she sped off towards admit. As they got closer they saw Susan, Luka, Gallant and Jerry standing watching him walk towards them.

"Hey guys. Which way for the shot?"

"Curtain 3 Carter." Susan answered with a smirk.

They watched him as he walked off towards the curtain with Abby in tow behind him.

"You were saying?!" Abby said sarcastically, knowing Gallant had said something

"What was their problem?"

"I told you. Gallant may look sweet and innocent but inside he's evil and twisted!"

"I wouldn't go that far! I would never have guessed."

"Well you don't know EVERYTHING John."

He tilted his head on side and looked at her in a strange way. She called him John. He couldn't remember the last time she said that. It comforted him, maybe she did feel the same way.

"Ok Dr Carter. Please lift up your shirt sleeve, this may hurt."
