Summary: Oliver's thoughts on Sam and Andy's relationship

It wasn't the first time Oliver Shaw had wanted to throttle Sam Swarek. He'd known the man for years and they'd butted heads more than once.
Today Oliver wasn't angry at his friend. Okay maybe a little.
He was frustrated that Sam wasn't talking.
To him.
To Andy.
To anybody as far as he could tell.
At least not about the subject that mattered.
The one that was currently trapped in a burned out Laundromat.

Oliver had been fortunate with matters of the heart. His wife was his best friend and the love of his life. He knew most people didn't get that lucky.
He wanted Sam to be happy.
Oliver understood and remembered the aspects of bachelorhood But he also remembered that got old after awhile. Bars and clubs started to look the same.
He had long suspected that Sam had fallen for his rookie.
Fallen hard.
So hard that it scared Sam.
That suspicion had been confirmed the day Andy had gotten shot.

Oliver could still see the panic on Sam's face as he fought through the terrified crowd to get to Andy. Shaw had never been so thankful for the bullet proof vest that day and he knew Swarek had been as well.
If the shot had been six inches off Andy might not have made it to the hospital in time. Oliver had thought that incident might have jolted Sam into action where Andy was concerned.
They weren't trainer and trainee any longer there weren't any regs against it.
Then the news of McNally's engagement to Callaghan had hit and Oliver had seen the walls go back up around Sam's heart.
Solid iron walls.
Doing everything he could to put up a happy front.
Then Callaghan had been shot and Andy had stuck like glue to her fiancé's side.
Trying to do the right thing even though Oliver knew Luke didn't deserve her loyalty.

Looking over at Sam who stood solemnly by one of the fire trucks Oliver sighed. His friend's dark gaze was fixed on the shattered building. Boring holes into the backs of the firemen as they struggled to stabilize the building.
Oliver had to refrain himself from asking the fireman in charge how much longer.
He'd already done it at least five times and knew he was irritating the man.
Which wasn't Oliver's intention he just felt helpless.
Helpless and responsible.

Oliver knew the only thing keeping Sam out here was the fact that gong in would endanger Andy more.
If the fire crew couldn't stabilize the structure and things went south...
Oliver didn't want to think of what it would do to the rookies of the 15th.
To him.
To Sam.

McNally had become an integral part of all their lives in a short time. She had the makings of becoming a hell of a cop.
A cop the city of Toronto needed.
A friend they all needed.
Oliver knew that if they lost Andy today it would drastically change Sam.
That was something he didn't want to see happen.
He'd seen people lose partners before.
However it was obvious to Oliver that Andy and Sam's bond went deeper than partners.
Deeper than friendship.
Something probably neither of them had defined yet.

Oliver looked from Sam to the burned out building. He sent off his twentieth prayer of the afternoon.
There had to be a happy ending to this one.
Two of the best people he knew deserved a chance at a happy ending.
