Prolong: The First Moment We Met

Paris, France, 4:25PM CEST

"My name is John, this Dick. He's the math geek who jumped in to a tree to save you." The taller boy said indicting to the boy who was holding my hand.

"The elephant is Titano." Dick whispered to me as I thought of what to say when the question was asked, "What's your name?"

Instead of asking what was my name the two boys asked what brought me to Paris, "Celebrating my birthday with my mother and Aunt Nyssa; it's a tradition to meet Aunt Nyssa in Paris."

John squinted at me for a moment, "Does your Aunt not get long with your dad?"

I tensed at that question, "I wouldn't know. I don't know anything about my father."

Dick squeezed my hand and gave his cousin a pointed look, "How about you tell us your name?"

"I'm Nicole." I said hoping that they believed my lie.

That was my first time making friends with children my age or who actually acted like a kid. I knew that it may sound strange but I knew that this is ridiculous… I felt strange; my heart felt light and I couldn't stop smiling. I was happy.

"Welcome Miss. Nicole to the Haley's International Traveling Circus." Dick said as he dragged all over the circus.

His cousin would snicker when someone asked Dick if I was his girlfriend; Mary Grayson was the first adult to ask about how we met. Dick's dad was funny and made jokes I didn't understand; Rick Grayson was the namesake for Dick. Dick Grayson's Aunt Karla was just as sweet as Mary. There was a moment when I thought of my own mother cold, distant, and possessive.

"Anyway, Nikki does your parents know where you are?" Karla asked though I was spared from answering because her son quickly indicated to stop that line of inquiry.

Mary Grayson however raised her eyebrow and asked in a most serious tone, "Nicole, did you runaway?"

I sighed and shook my head, "No I just I wandered for a moment and then I saw a little girl being bullied by this tree…" I sighed while being slightly nervous about what going to happen.

That night began my path to the "good fight" as my dad would say; the path to my real family, my friends, and my life- a once chance meeting with a boy who was exactly six months younger than me. All led to the one moment when a red-headed speedster wearing bright yellow ran into me as he impulsively ran ahead of his friends in a underground lab.
