That's why he loves this planet
This is my first Smallville fanfiction ever. By posting this one-shot, I can now cross out one of my New Year's resolutions. I am not a writer but would love to learn how to tell a compelling story as many so successfully do on this forum. Also, please be kind as English is my second language and there are still some crazy prepositions that may sound right to me and be completely off to a native speaker. Any comments would be appreciated. Happy New Year to all the wonderful writers and their faithful readers.
It seemed all the neighborhood kids were running around outside as he looked at them, reminiscing about how he once wished to be included, to share in the innocence of just being a kid. He knew for him that had not been possible, not without risking discovery, or worse, someone's injury.
As he looked at them now, an observer from far away, he could not help but smile. He had arrived the previous night as the cries for help continued to multiply. Families were being forced to leave their small town at gunpoint. Arriving to witness the petulance of those armed men as they made their demands was most unfortunate for them. His response had been swift. While he had been angry enough at their pettiness and so, so tempted to repay them in-kind, in retrospect, they should have been grateful he would never cross that line. They may not have been redeemable, but he was not above them either.
As his thoughts returned to the scenery before him, he was touched even more as the kids continued to play together on the dirt floor. Their makeshift ball was being tossed around and being put together one more time as their enthusiasm grew. Their joy for the game was contagious. He smiled again.
That's why he loves this planet. His home. He cannot help but be inspired by the people of the world. What this community lacked in resources was not an impediment for their tenacity and determination. They were braver than many whose attitude is only to demand for themselves, without any regards to others. At the end, he knew the best of humanity always surfaced in spite of the calamity of other people's empty hearts.
The new year was soon approaching and as the kids stopped playing to go to their homes, he could not help but renew his solemn promise to not be blind, to continue to see the good in all the people of the world. This human phenomenon was omnipresent, he knew first hand. That was his privilege.
As he slowly rose to the sky once again, he could not help but stop to put together his own ball, just like the ones the kids had been using. He may not have needed a reminder, eidetic memory and all, but perhaps he did want a memento of the significance of being human.
Once at home, Lois listened to him as he shared the story and showed her the ball. Lois nodded and held his hand, as she struggled to keep her emotions in check and failing very shortly thereafter. She could not hold herself back any longer. Reaching for him, she kissed him tenderly.
'You may not be human,' Lois lovingly conveyed with her eyes, 'but you surely have the heart of one.'
'Happy New Year, Smallville.' 'Happy New Year, Lois.' Their thoughts did not need to be expressed. Knowingly, they simply smiled.
