Toph laid her head on her arms, which were crossed on the side of Appa's saddle. She let out a deep sigh.
"Something wrong, Toph?" Katara asked. It was only a sigh, but everyone else was silent.
"Oh, nothing…." Toph slurred.
They, Aang, Katara, Toph, Sokka, and Suki, were all wearing the green outfits they were wearing the night before. The gAang were celebrating hours on end last night in Ba Sing Se, and none of them were in mood the change. And they woke up the next day really early, since they wanted to leave soon.
"Brrrr! I'm getting cold!" Suki exclaimed. Sokka put his arm around her shoulders. "We must be close."
"There it is!" Katara exclaimed. Indeed, just beyond the horizon was the familiar scene of ice and snow; home.
The second they landed, Katara and Sokka slid off Appa. A small group, larger than it was a year ago, formed around them. Gran-gran eventually pushed herself through the crowd.
"Katara. Sokka!" She exclaimed, and ran towards them to hug them both. "It's so good to see you again."
Toph went to dig through everyone's clothes, and finally found a coat. She slid it over her head, and wrapped her arms around herself.
Reluctantly, Toph slid off Appa and onto the block of ice which she can't see on.
"Aang?" She asked.
"I'm over here." He said, and she followed his voice. "Right here." He said just before she bumped into him.
"So…Suki and Sokka's gonna stay here, right?"
"Right."
"And you?"
"Katara and I are going to the Southern Air Temple."
"Oh, yeah."
"Bye, Aang." Toph jumped. Sokka snuck up next to her to say goodbye.
"I'm so glad you helped me, Sokka. You've been a real friend." Aang smiled, and slowly let go to Sokka. Sokka moved to Toph.
"Bye." He smiled.
"See yah." Toph sighed. She was horrible at goodbyes.
Suddenly, without warning or hesitation, they flew towards eachother, and held eachother tightly.
"Remember to write." Toph said.
"Of course. And if your parents give you any trouble-"
"Come to you. I'll miss you, Sokka."
"You too."
Toph and Sokka let go, but still held eachother by the fingertips.
"Um…Sokka? Can I talk to you? Privately?"
"Sure."
"Guide me. I can't see."
"Oh, right." Sokka wrapped his hand around hers, and walked behind one of the houses.
Toph took a deep sigh, and felt herself trembling. She's never been so scared in her life. "Sokka…I-." love you. Say it, damn it. She almost said it. She knew deep down she should, for fear she may never see him again. But she choked. "You've always been my best friend. And I'll miss you the most."
"You, too."
Idiot.
