All he ever did, was follow the orders of Akito; the head of the Sohma clan. He was forbidden to have any outside contact, especially with the opposite sex. Shigure never questioned, knowing that the person he held dear was Akito himself. (1)
"You're just a dog, remember that Shigure. All you're good at is following orders from your master," Akito reminded him once again of his position. Shigure, 23-years old, had a dream. He wondered if his dream was even good enough by Akito's standards.
"Akito."
"What is it, Shigure?" the young heir wondered, sitting propped up on his futon.
"There is a matter I want to discuss with you," Shigure said, sitting before the boy. Akito's dark eyes narrowed,
"If it's a matter that I have spoken of before, do not bring it up for you know my immediate answer."
"It is a matter that I have only recently thought of," Shigure replied slowly, peeking up through his bangs to survey the male before him.
"I see, then speak."
"I wish to pursue a career in being a novelist."
At first there was silence, only the sounds of birds chirping could be heard. Then after, the infamous, crazy laugh. Shigure flinched slightly, knowing that there was more backlash coming.
"A novelist you say?" Another round of laughter and then the sound of rushed footsteps with a harsh brushing of cloth. Akito stood towering over the dog zodiac and leered,
"Will anyone ever take your work knowing that you're one of the cursed? They wouldn't care if your work is one of the best published or if it will get their company the best publicity, they will still deny you, shun you. We are meant to be alone. Give up, Shigure."
But Shigure didn't want to give up. Akito's words were law, he would abide by them immediately, but not for this.
"I want to become a novelist," Shigure pressed. Bony fingers gripped his short hair, yanking Shigure's head back,
"Where has your obedience gone, Shigure? You used to follow me around. I even forgave you when you went frolicking around with my mother. You should be loyal to me!"
"I will always be loyal to you, but personally, being a novelist is something I want to pursue. It is what I want," Shigure replied through clenched teeth. He could feel his hair being pulled by its roots. The grip was loosened, but it was just an opening for the unexpected slap to his head. Shigure almost bit his tongue at the sudden action and his head throbbed painfully.
"Do not come for me wanting forgiveness. I will not give it to you."

Shigure, still dazed by Akito's decision, tried desperately over the next few weeks in finding a literary agent that would help bring him into the writing industry. Like Akito's early warning, he was rejected and shunned time and time again. But it was after a handful of failed attempts that he had managed to snatch one and thus was introduced to his newfound editor, Mitsuru.
"Sure, I'll be your editor."
The woman sitting across from him was open minded, loud and strict. She didn't know about his curse, nor had his agent. It was an oppurtunity that he couldn't pass up. Smiling, Shigure handed her his first manuscript,
"Good. So, shall we get to work?"
It was then that Shigure Sohma a.k.a Kiritani Noa (2) became the most popular romance novelist of his time.

(1) I'm going by the Anime when dealing with Akito's gender, but kept his relationship with Shigure the same as in the Manga.
(2) Kiritani Noa is Shigure's penname for most of his romance novels as stated on Wiki and other Character profiles of Shigure's.
