The Track of the Millennia

Chapter 1: They Came In

----------

As Yugi kept walking down the sidewalk, returning home after another day of school, no one would have thought that there was something wrong, that something bad was going to happen.

Two weeks ago, before that dreadful day happened, Yugi's grandpa, Solomon, taking care of some customers as always, had spotted a black car parked in front of his well-known Game Shop. Big and luxurious, armored and eye-catching, a suspicious object that would attract anyone's attention, but not for Solomon, not for him. Had he noticed before, had he been a little perceptive, could that dreadful thing have been avoided…? Two men, dressed in black and wearing dark glasses came out of the car and entered the shop. 'Welcome' said Solomon, smiling to more-to-come money. Contrary to what they seemed, they just asked if Solomon owned the place, and what kind of merchandise he sold, were they looking for something?

Solomon, oblivious as ever, told them he owned the Game shop, home of the most famous product amongst the kids and teenagers, Duel Monsters. Cards, nothing else, nothing more, that's what he sold. Only cards? They asked, Only cards, said Solomon. The two men frowned, looking slightly disappointed. They had been told that was the right place. What was that they were looking for? How long have they been looking?

They were both about to leave the establishment, muttering something about looking somewhere else; but then it happened, Yugi came into the shop.

I'm home, Grandpa. That's what he said as he silently came in. He was carrying a schoolbag, clearly returning home after an exhausting day at school. He shifted his gaze towards the two men. His face and height would tell he was young, despite the fact he was 5 years older than he looked. He nodded at them gently and they nodded back. He had lilac and a merry face, what others would call cute. There was something gold hanging from his neck; golden, bright, hanging from his neck…

They left without a word after that, not appearing ever again around the place, not appearing anywhere Yugi might notice. Shouldn't have Solomon be suspicious, those days after he saw the same car parked in different places every day? Shouldn't have he told him?

Yugi didn't know. Yugi had to know. It was crucial for him to know; but cruel destiny would not let him escape the suffering and sorrow, the pain that was yet to come. For the moment he entered, his fate was sealed.
