Stan Shunpike: Renaissance Man
"So then, I says to Viktor Krum, 'Look, you have something kid, but to play you need to learn to risk your neck'—you see Viktor was afraid of heights at the time—'So, we are going to get you to where you need to be.' Oh, and Victor looked up at me with a sad smile, he tol' me that he just didn't think he could do it. And I says, 'Viktor, you are going to do it, I will teach you al' I know. We'll face this challenge dead on.' So, that was when I taught Viktor Krum the Wronski Feint. He got over his fear of heights immediately—"
"Oh wow! He must really owe a lot to you!" gushed a pretty young woman.
"Yes, well, I don' like to brag about it," said a young man, grinning crooked and stuffing his hands in his pockets.
"So, do you think you could maybe show me some of your tricks—" started the woman. Suddenly the man's eyes glazed over, staring into the distance. She followed his eyes and noticed that they had landed on a group of people not to far away, containing quite a few young men and a few young women with long silvery hair—Veela. The man pushed past her and she turned away in a huff.
The man approached the group, immediately integrating himself. "Vhat do you think is going on?" asked one Veela.
"Oh, it is probably just some immature wizards looking to give folks a scare," said the man. "I have to deal with them kind all the time."
"Oh?" the Veela looked interested.
"Yeah, I work as the head of the Auror Depar'ment…" said the man.
"You do not!" interjected another young man. "That's Rufus Scrimegeour!"
"He retired!" the man shot back. He returned his attentions to the Veela. "Not that it matters much anyway, I am actually about to get another promotion. I should introduce myself. I'm Stan, Stan Shunpike. Soon though, tha' will be Minster Shunpike. I'm about to become the youngest ever Minister of Magic, I am."*
"Oh, really?" swooned the Veela.
"Yep," grinned Stan.
"You must be very powerful."
"Well…"
"Well, I just invented an immediate cure for Dragon Pox!" shouted another young man. This captured the group's attention, leaving Stan on the periphery, his hopes smashed. Well, smashed for that night anyway. For you see, anything was possible for Stan Shunpike if he was the next Minister of Magic, a Head Auror, a Master of Quidditch, a musical sensation (he was particularly big in Greenland), and a sensitive poet. Yes, anything was possible if he was not merely Stan, the Knight Bus attendant. Perhaps tomorrow he would invent new form of time-travel or become a snake wrangler.
The end.
