Chapter 1

How? And Why? I'm Just Boring, Plain Alice!

It was an early summer morning, with the waves quietly crashing and no one at the beach at all. I was sitting on the rocks waiting for something to happen, and like always, it didn't. Instead many different memories of the beach came flowing into my head, but only one particularly stood out.

I was eight years old and it was my birthday, so I spent it at the beach playing in the water with my parents. After a while, both of them got tired and decided to head back in, knowing I was just fine by myself. So I continued playing and splashing around, when suddenly I ran (or swam I guess) into a boy. When I looked up to apologize the words couldn't seem to form. Right there, in front of me was the most beautiful person I've ever seen. He had cool brown hair, and pure, innocent blue eyes, which seemed to tell a million stories at once. The boy smiled at me and quietly said "It's ok." And I guess it was. He then held out his hand and I unconsciously took it. I was swept away under water and the boy took me to the coral reef that was nearby. There, I saw a breathtaking sight of rainbow coral, brightly colored fish, and more starfish than I could count. Since I couldn't speak I smiled at him with gratitude and went up for air. I started swimming back to the beach and noticed the boy was nowhere to be seen. A little disheartened, I made it to the rocks and sat on one of them. After that day, I never saw the boy again.

It's been eight years since then and so much has happened. When I was eleven, my parents died in a car accident, so I was passed from family member to family member. Now I live alone on the money I inherited from them. Sure, I've been lonely, but that's okay, since I know I can trust myself.

I gazed off at sea seeing illusions of the boy standing there, a small ache in my heart filled with the desire to meet him again. Looking down the rock, I peered into a pair of gorgeous blue eyes. Wait, gorgeous blue eyes? It was the boy from eight years ago! Trembling a bit, I looked at him and murmured, "It's you. I thought you had disappeared." That same beautiful smile appeared on his face. "I think that the beautiful girl I've been admiring for so long is mistaken," he explained, "Never have I disappeared, but instead I waited for the right time to reacquaint myself with you." A goofy expression sprawled on my face and I looked down out of shyness and noticed a large tail in the water. "OH MY GOD THERE'S A SHARK! YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF THE WATER NOW!" I screamed, trying to pull him out of the water. "Wait hold on a second! You can't!" But it was too late, for I saw and remembered what I had forgotten many years ago. My dream boy was a merman.
