A/N : this first chapter is kind of a general intro so it's gonna go a little fast and there's not gonna be a lot of korrasami yet.

I hope it's not ooc. This is kind of how I imagine Korra in book 1 if she were a little more of a brat.

"A-choo !" Asami sneezed, and apologized immediatly.

"You know, if you're sick you could have just stayed home." Korra winced at her words. Stupid !

Asami raised an eyebrow, "I am home."

The Sato family had offered to shelter Mako and Bolin after what happened at the last pro-bending tournament, frustrating Korra since she had already asked Tenzin if they could shelter her friends. Asami was giving them a tour of her house and, judging by the sounds they were making, Mako and Bolin were mesmerized. She didn't even know Mako could be so vocal.

Then Asami sneezed and Korra, miffed by the whole situation, took the opportunity to sass at the girl. And ruined it.

"Maybe you should go home, you do look a little tired." she added, a fake concerned smile on her face.

They've been making passive aggressive comments to each other a lot since they met, mostly – all, actually – due to Korra, but this was the first time Asami's irritation of her was so direct.

Usually, even after all of Korra's snide mumbled comments – which would only sometimes be met with Asami's own snide replies – she would still be nice to her the next time she saw her. Until Korra annoyed her again.

Maybe she's finally realized we'll never be friends.

Mako and Bolin were looking particularly uncomfortable.

"You know what ? You're right." Korra replied, with a fake smile of her own, "I'm just gonna use your bathroom first."

She went upstairs and that's when she overheard – eavesdropped on, whatever – a private phone conversation.

She had to tell the police what she heard.

"Mako won't like it, and Bolin either so I'd have to work on my own." she sighed, "I don't know about this." Korra said, a little nervously. She had just overheard an incriminating conversation Hiroshi Sato was having on the phone and immediatly informed Tenzin and Chief Beifong.

The latter then suggested she gets close to Asami in order to find out more information about the Satos' possible involvement in the equalist movement.

At first, Korra had refused, she thought she might not get very far considering she was a bender herself – of all elements nonetheless – but Lin told her it was very unlikely Asami was involved in her father's alleged plans (but that they couldn't completely rule it out). When she asked her what was the point of her getting close to the Future industries heir if she was not able to give her any information, Lin explained that if she visited the Satos enough she could eavesdrop on more conversations Hiroshi was having, or find out things through Asami that even she might not know is suspicious and even snoop through her father's office.

"You will do just fine, Korra. Believe in yourself." Tenzin reassured her.

"I don't know. I really don't wanna use Asami like this..." she might not like her crush's girlfriend a lot – or at all – but pretending to befriend her just to spy on her family still rubbed her the wrong way.

"It's not like we have a lot of leads right now, Avatar. Are you in or not?" Chief Beifong asked her, showing no compassion whatsoever at her internal dilemma. "Oh, and just so you know, since you're not a police officer this is strictly off the books. If anything goes wrong for you, I won't take responsability."

"Yeah, I figured." Korra thought about it one last time. Maybe she wouldn't have to lie directly to Asami. If her and Mako continued dating, and her father continued sponsoring the Fire Ferrets, she'd find herself at the green eyed girl's house (well, mansion) very often. And then she wouldn't have to pretend to be her friend.

But she didn't want Mako and Asami to keep seeing each other !

Korra sighed again. She knew the only way for this spy job to work would be to get close to the girl herself, there was no way around that.

Come on, Korra, don't be selfish. This is for the greater good. Your romantic plans can wait.

"I'm in."

Ok. Now she just had to befriend Asami. That's easy ! She was great with people. No need to worry.

She's not nervous. Not at all.

Korra internally cursed at herself, what is wrong with me ? Alright. Breathe. She's not gonna know I'm a spy. She's just gonna think i'm being friendly !

She just needs to approch her and find something they have in common to talk about. Mako ? Ok, bad idea. Pro-bending ? No. That's just gonna create a superficial friendship for like, ten minutes. She needed something they actually could bond over.

So, this was proving to be more difficult than she initially thought. Maybe she'll just leave the deep bonding for another time and start easy, with a light conversation that will make Asami think of her as a charmingly funny person that she wants to get to know.

Maybe she's being overly cautious but she also hasn't been really nice towards the girl since they met so it could come off as suspicious if she just suddenly pulled a one-eighty and tried to strike up a friendship with her. For now, until the opportunity presents itself, she will just try to be nicer to her meaning no more eye rolling when she's talking, no more repeating what she says in a ridiculous voice to mock her and no more fake barfing sounds when she and Mako kiss in front of her.

She could do that.

They were all - meaning her, Asami, Mako and Bolin - swimming in the Satos' residence pool when Hiroshi called for Mako, asking to discuss a few things concerning the family's sponsorship of their team and Bolin hurriedly left the water a few minutes after that, looking a little green, having eaten to much beforehand.

What a goof. She told him not to do that, but at least it created the perfect opportunity for her to approach Asami.

It also seemed that Asami noticed the change in her behavior since yesterday because she's been smiling at her more today. Actually, she always smiled at her, even when she was acting like a bitch towards her the day before, but those smiles were less… enthusiastic.

Now Korra realized how uncomfortable she must have made her feel before.

Which is understandable. She tried to imagine what she would feel if her boyfriend was in a pro-bending team with a girl who likes him and who he'd kissed (has he told her about that ?) and who also happened to be the Avatar.

Her head started to hurt.

Ugh, what am I doing ? She's a potential enemy, I can't empathize with her !

Still, she swam across the pool to find Asami on the other side and tried to start a conversation.

"Hey." Alright. Good start. Simple, but effective.

"Hey Korra," she smiled. Oh god what could she say next ?

"I thought it'd be awkward if we didn't talk until the boys came back. So…"

Asami raised an eyebrow, but a smile was still playing on her lips, "So…?"

"I'm gonna give you my top five of Bolin's dumbest moments."

Asami looked at her blankly for a few seconds then laughed heartily and Korra had to stop herself from sighing in relief. That was a risky try, she didn't really know the girl's sense of humor.

"That's going to be a very exclusive list," Korra started and Asami laughed again. Yes ! I made her laugh twice ! she thought excitingly. "Let's start with number five. So this one time..." she started, as Asami listened with a toothy smile on her face.

It's very hard, Korra thought, having to admit to yourself that the worst person you know was actually very funny. They had spent about five minutes recalling their funniest 'Bolin stories' and laughing like maniacs until the subject changed and they found themselves in a casual conversation.

She tried to casually touch the other girl's arm every now and then to instill a sense of familiarity between them.

They were interrupted when both Mako and Bolin came back all dressed and stared at them, their eyes narrowed.

"Hm, I see. About time you two finally got along." The youger brother said, stroking his chin.

They both blushed as they were put on the spot and Korra quickly diverted the attention from them.

"Yeah, we were actually talking about you, Bo-bo."

Asami snorted in laughter at the nickname and Korra gave her a fake lopsided grin. Making her laugh was so easy, it was almost annoying.

"Oooh what were you saying ? Nice things I hope !"

Asami snorted again.

Korra was laying on her bed, thinking about her day.

It had been so easy playing spy and lying to Asami. Was she that kind of person ? The kind who could lie without difficulty and not feel any remorse ? Because the only guilt she felt was about not feeling guilty.

Or is it just because she despises Asami ?

Ok, I don't despise her, I just don't like how whipped she has Mako and Bolin, how bourgeois she acts, and how her make up is always so perfect, and how I've never seen her in a bad hair day. Who the hell does she think she is ?

So you're jealous.

No I'm not ! You're jealous !

I'm you, dumbass.

Korra sighed at her internal dialogue. She was not jealous, not even about Mako. She knew he liked her back, and she was playing the long game. He can enjoy his Asami for now, but once Korra catches her for the equalist that she is, Mako will see her for what she truly is a double-faced troll.

She sighed again. It would be so much easier if she were ugly. Or just a little less gorgeous. Or actually guilty of being an equalist.

Korra tried to shake the thoughts out of her mind. She had more important things to think about, like coming up with a plan to get closer to Asami than even Mako without her or her father getting suspiscious.

She was starting to get anxious. It's not like she had a deadline, but the longer she takes to gain the Sato's trust, the worse the equalist movement gets. In the time it will take Korra to win Asami over, Amon could take more people's bending, recruit more non benders, and get closer to destabilizing Republic City until he finally takes control.

She couldn't let that happen.

I need to work faster.

Just do what you did today, she was practically fawning over you when you were talking to her.

True. I know I'm the Avatar, but why would she be so excited about us being friends ?

Did you hear the way she was laughing at your jokes ? You're not that funny. It's because that was the first time you ever showed any kind of interest in her and she must have unconsciously been looking for your approbation.

Yeah, I bet she's used to people trying to impress her. That bitch.

I mean, you were kinda mean to her before…

No, I wasn't !

(Ten days ago…

Korra and her friends – and Mako's girlfriend – were walking the streets when Asami pointed to a violonist a few feet away from them, playing for money.

'I love that song ! It's so elegant !' she said, squeezing Mako's arm.

'I leuve that seung ! It's seu elegant !' Korra imitated her, scrunching up her face and puckering her lips.)

Ok, so I was a little bitchy. Whatever.

Listen to your conscience – that's me by the way – and hear this : you were a meany.

She was pulled out of her thoughts when Pema entered her room, followed by Bolin and Pabu. She sat up straighter on her bed.

"Bolin brought a friend !" Pema said.

Right, he somehow convinced me to act as a jury for his pet's moves. Apparently he wanted to put on a show with Pabu for Hiroshi.

"Hey Ko-ko," Oh great, why did I ever call him Bo-bo ? "Ready for the show ? We're gonna blow your mind !"

Korra couldn't believe she actually spent a whole hour judging a fire ferret show with a straight face, giving notes and advice. Is this what her life had come to ? Behold the Avatar, master of the four elements, spending friday night in her room watching a tiny animal do tricks.

When they both got bored with the talent show, they laid down and started chatting idly. Talking with Bolin always made Korra feel better, even when they'd talk about trivial things, she felt she could escape her feelings for a while. Bolin had that effect on people. Or maybe he just talked too much.

"By the way, it's cool that you're friends with Asami, now. It got awkward a lot when you hated her."

"I didn't hate her." she scowled.

'Really ? Reaaaally ?'

("A-choo !" Asami sneezed, and apologized immediatly.

"You know, if you're sick you could have just stayed home.")

"Whatever. We're not friends." she said, then she remembered her mission, "But, we're getting there, I guess. Um… Did you ever notice something weird about her ?"

"Weird ?"

"Yeah, you know," she laughed nervously, "Like, you know." Very comprehensible, Korra.

Bolin thought about it for a while, "Nah." She nodded. She should have known he wasn't the right person to ask that sort of things. He was way too naive and trusting, but that's part of why she likes him so much.

He pulled her out of her thoughts, "Do you know if the police has any new leads on Amon ? No offense to them, but I don't think following up on Cabbage Corp will be very useful. It's obviously a diversion."

She sat up straighter upon hearing his words and he did the same, "You think so too ?"

"Yeah ! It made me think maybe a rival company wanted to kill two birds in one stone by – "

"By framing Cabbage Corp, to eliminate the competition and remove any possibility of them being suspected." she finished.

She stared at him with a grin on her face. Of course she already knew all that, but maybe this was the opportunity she was looking for to ask for some advice.

Also, she was… impressed. She looked him over appreciatingly. Usually, that type of logical reasoning came from Mako's brain. Seems like she underestimated him.

"Say, if that were true, what would be your first action to prove it ?"

He tapped a finger on his chin, "Well, first I'd… search all of that company's factories, obviously."

"But what if you can't find anything ? What would you do then ?"

When she first came to Chief Beifong and Tenzin about the situation, she expected them to conduct a search in Hiroshi's factories. But since her mission was off the books and thus illegal, she can't possibly get a warrant, not mentioning the fact that this is supposed to be a discreet job.

She's already decided to sneak into the factories just in case. After all, Lin did tell her she had free rein.

"Damn, Korra I thought this was hypothetical !" he laughed and she imitated him nervously. "Now what would Mako do…" he mumbled. "Ah ! I know ! Mako would probably say something like," he narrowed his eyes and spiked up his hair to imitate his brother, "Maybe we're not looking in the right places."

She chuckled, "That does sound like him."

She wished she knew what the hell he meant by that so she could have an idea as to what to do next if she doesn't find anything in the factories.

"You know what, you and Mako would make great detectives !" she added when she noticed Bolin looking at her strangely after she sat in silence for a minute.

Bolin squealed and started coming up with crazy scenarios about his brother and him solving crimes and seducing women. Korra was glad for the distraction.

Korra hated herself right now. Actually no, she hated Bolin.

Just how the hell could she smoothly get out of being Mako and Asami's third wheel ? Mako looked just as uncomfortable as her, if not more, and Asami was making all the conversation, pretending not to notice the awkward atmosphere at the booth.

She should've said no to Bolin when he begged her to come with them at Mako's favorite restaurant because he didn't want to be the third wheel again, but she didn't. After all, she has a job to do and the more time she spends with Asami, the faster she'll complete it.

Then one of Bolin's fangirls batted her eyelashes at him and he abandonned her to the very thing he was avoiding.

That traitor !

She needed to spend time with Asami, not Asami and Mako ! How can she concentrate when she just wants to claw her eyes out ?

Alright, just relax. This is your conscience talking, you can't put your personal feelings before the mission. Ignore Mako and focus on Asami !

Good idea !

"… And that's how I lost my last baby tooth." Asami finished.

Is that what I've been nodding to for the past three minutes ? Spirits, we must be awful company.

"Fascinating. Hey Asami, I've been wondering, where is your family from initially ?" she asked, leaning her head on her fist.

By asking her a personal question, I'm showing Asami that I'm interested in getting to know her and being her friend. It will flatter her ego and make her more sensible to my charms. I'll win her over in a snap.

You just have to be her friend, not seduce her.

That's not what I meant !

Asami gave her a bright smile, mostly of relief not to have to carry the conversation on her back anymore, "I'm mostly Fire Nation, but I actually recently find out I have some ancestors from the Earth Kingdom !"

"Wow, really ! Where from specifically ?"

"Yu Dao ! It's funny because people tell me all the time that my eyes…"

Minutes passed and Mako listened to their conversation silently. Truthfully, he's starting to feel a little left out. He thought it was weird at first, suspicious even, how Korra suddenly changed her behavior towards his girlfriend, especially considering his history with her.

Then he thought it was a good thing. They could all become friends and they wouldn't have to exclude Korra from plans to avoid the awkward ambiance that usually followed when the two girls were there anymore.

But now… They're not even paying attention to him, too engrossed in their conversation about how Asami's eyes reflected her Earth Kingdom origins, apparently and… Did Korra just call Asami's eyes beautiful ?

An hour later and Mako still hasn't said a word, beside the occasional hmm and yeah, that's crazy when one of them took pity on him and tried to include him in the conversation. Needless to say, he was scowling.

Asami looked at the time and cursed as she got up, "I totally forgot I had a prior engagement, I have to go ! Sorry, babe," she leaned down to peck Mako on the lips, "I'll take care of the note, don't worry. Bye, Korra ! You have to introduce me to Meelo, I'm not even kidding !" she laughed.

Korra laughed too, "Sure ! Just don't blame me when you find him hiding in your closet one day."

Haha ! We have inside jokes now !

She noticed Mako looking at her with his eyes narrowed, "What ?" she asked defensively.

"What was that ?"

"What was what ?"

"That."

"That, what ?"

"Alright, stop !" he pinched the bridge of his nose, he clearly underestimated how annoying Korra could show herself to be, "How come you're friends with Asami, now ? It's like you changed your whole attitude in one day !"

She tried not to show any sign of nervousness, knowing how persceptive Mako is. Fuck ! Of course he'd be suspiscious, he's too smart !

"Huh, you think so. I – I just didn't want things to be uncomfortable between us anymore. Really." she added when she saw his skeptical stare.

"Just like that ? You went from hating her guts to calling her eyes a beautiful forest green color, just like that ? Come on, what are you doing ?"

Korra flushed. She might have went overboard with the whole 'win Asami over' thing.

"Ok, I didn't hate her first of all – "

"And you didn't even pretend to puke when she kissed me. Honestly, that was the tell."

She looked at him for a few seconds then sighed, "Look, Mako… I'm sorry I was mean to her before. I was just jealous, but I – I'm over it now. I like Asami, I wanna be her friend. I want us all to be friends and I knew it was up to me to take the first step. I don't have any ulterior motive, I promise."

He seemed to soften at her response and he gave a small smile.

"Ok. I'm sorry I accused you… And, thank you." he said, putting his hand over hers across the table.

Korra gulped. She ignored the pang of guilt in her chest that came from manipulating him and forced a smile.

A/N : should I continue this? let me know.

I like reviews, they motivate me!
