Summary: There is a very good reason why nobody messes with Konoha's Yondaime.

Rocks Fall
(Once there were two boys and a girl. One of the boys was a genius, cold and stiff and humorless. The other boy had always been the dead last in whatever he did, but was nonetheless cheerful and determined to do better and win the girl's heart. The girl was a medic, sweet and gentle and with endless patience and who wanted nothing more than to heal the broken genius.)
Rocks
This is the Yondaime Hokage:
The easiest thing to compare him to would be the sun. He is warm and bright, and his people trust him as they trust the sun to rise in the morning and set in the evening. He is pleasant and has an undeniable natural charisma and always knows exactly what to say to get the results he wants. He is the dragon-slaying princess-rescuing knight who has decided not to don the shining armor that would make him faceless and unapproachable. He has a prosperous village and a beautiful wife and two wonderful children, all of whom love him unconditionally.

He is quite possibly the most powerful Hokage in the history of the Village Hidden in the Leaves, fast and deadly and efficient in battle and a genius with seals and strategy and combat and ninjutsu. His remarkable ability to think up plans on the fly is almost as legendary as the signature technique for which he is nicknamed after. If he has ever lost a fight, then no living person can remember it.

That is not the reason that there has never once been an assassination attempt on his family and friends and allies. That is not the reason that mothers in other villages are afraid to use him as a bogeyman to scare their children with tales of.
dies.
(Once there were five great shinobi villages.)
