Chapter 1: The Worst Birthday
For most of my life there have been arguments at the breakfast table, mostly because Dudley was being a jerk and wanted to get me or Harry into trouble. Today though, Uncle Vernon had been woken up early this morning by Hedwig and Godric hooting saying they wanted to go out and fly, stretch their wings out, exercise. They've been stuck in their cage all summer and they couldn't take it anymore.
"Third time this week!" Uncle Vernon roared across the table. "If you can't control that owl, it'll have to go!" We've been trying to explain but they wouldn't hear any of it. I frown as Harry tried, yet again, to explain. "They're bored," he said "They are used to flying around outside. If we could just let them out at night…"
Uncle Vernon cut him off again. "Do I look stupid?" He snarled. 'Well yes, but if I say that I'll be grounded till the end of summer.' A bit of fried egg was dangling from his bushy mustache. "I know what'll happen if those owl's let out." he exchanged a dark look with Aunt Petunia.
I tried to interject and explain but Dudley the favorite child in the house had let out a large belch before declaring "I want more bacon." He demanded "There's more in the frying pan, sweetgums," Aunt Petunia said turning her eyes to Dudley. "We must build you up while we've got the chance…I don't like the sound of that school food…"
"Enfant gâté." (Spoiled child) I muttered under my breath looking at my lap. "What was that?" Aunt Petunia demanded glaring at me. I jump and stare at her wide eyed "Nothing just saying he's going to be very strong." She nodded "Yes he is, indeed." I sighed with relief. They saw through that thankfully.
"Anyway that's nonsense, Petunia, I never went hungry when I was at Smeltings," Uncle Vernon said heartily. "Dudley's gets enough, don't you, son?" Dudley was so fat his bottom drooped over either side of the chair. He grinned at Harry. "Pass the frying pan."
"You've forgotten the magic word," Harry said irritably. My eyes widen in shock as I stare at him and he seemed to have realized it as soon as he said it as well. The effect of the word 'Magic' made Dudley gasp and fall off his chair crashing onto the kitchen floor making the table shake, Aunt Petunia gave a small scream and clapped her hands over her mouth, and Uncle Vernon jump to his feet, veins throbbing in his temples.
"I meant 'please'!" He quickly said "I didn't mean…" I cringe in pain at Uncle Vernon's loud voice as he hollered "WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU," he thundered, spraying spit all over the table, "ABOUT SAYING THE 'M' WORD IN OUR HOUSE?"
"But I…"
"HOW DARE YOU THREATEN DUDLEY!" he roared pounding the table with his fist. "I just…" Harry was trying to explain. They never listened to us. "I WARNED YOU! I WILL NOT TOLERATE THE MENTION OF YOUR ABNORMALITY UNDER THIS ROOF!" it wasn't an abnormality to have any magic in your body! I clench my fist slightly.
You have no idea how I've always wanted to yell back. I mean I have once or twice before and that got me in a load of trouble. Sometimes it's hard to keep hold of your tongue. "All right," Harry said, "all right…" Uncle Vernon sat back down, breathing like a winded rhinoceros and watching Harry closely out of the corners of his small, sharp eyes.
Ever since we came home for the summer holidays, Uncle Vernon has been treating us like a bomb was about to go off at any moment. We weren't normal. Not in the least bit according to Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Dudley. Heck we weren't even normal in the wizarding world. We were famous there. We survived an attack from Lord Voldemort.
An evil Dark Wizard who wanted to take control of the wizarding world. The only safe place anyone ever had while in Voldemort's rain was Hogwarts, a school for witches and wizards. Harry and I got our letters last year yet they were prevented for the longest of times thanks to our Uncle.
The Dursleys didn't like anything to deal with magic thinking it was a disgrace, a horrible waste of time. They hated us because our parents were a part of the magical world. Voldemort killed my mum and dad when Harry and I were still very young. Our mom protected us sacrificing her life for us to live. At the end of my first year at Hogwarts, Voldemort had taken part of my Defense against the dark arts teacher Quirrell and they shared a head!
I met him. He tried to kill me and my brother and take the Philosophers stone so he could get back to his full power. Thankfully Professor Dumbledore the head master of Hogwarts saved us and was able to destroy the stone. Voldemort is still out there, somewhere; trying to grow stronger and then one day come back and try to kill us again.
There is only one wizard Voldemort is afraid of, and that's Professor Dumbledore. Oh how I missed Hogwarts. It was my true home. Living with the Dursleys was like having the worst cramps of your life and you aren't able to get rid of them no matter how much you try. Back at Hogwarts I could see Ron, Hermione, the twins, heck I'd would have even been fine talking to Draco!
Draco Malfoy is a boy who would constantly get into a fight with Harry for stupid things. I spent most of my first year tutoring him in potions. Oh I missed potions. I've missed Professor Snape, he might have been a tough teacher but he was one of the bests. Then there was Hagrid, he was a wonderful friend. I would go visit him in his cabin next to the Forbidden Forest on the grounds and see Fang. He loved animals and cared so much for Hogwarts. Though I could do without his rock cakes.
All of my spell books, my wand, robes, and my cauldron had been locked away in the cupboard under the stairs where I used to live thanks to Uncle Vernon. Oh he wouldn't care if I didn't study over the summer. I needed to study though; I needed to make sure I knew the second year potion book by heart for Professor Snape so that he would be proud of me. I'm trying to be the best student I could. Oh and don't get me started on my homework.
I still had loads to do before school even started thanks to the Dursleys I wasn't able to get any of them done so I'll be failing my classes before they even start now! I'm doomed! As far as the Dursleys were concerned, having a witch AND wizard in the family was a matter of deepest shame.
Uncle Vernon even had a padlock on Godric's and Hedwig's cage; my poor owl was locked inside his cage to stop me or Harry from carrying messages to anyone in the wizarding world. They really didn't care for us. It was turning out to be a sucky birthday. Yeah today was our Twelfth birthday. I never had high hopes on my birthday, Harry and I never really got anything to be considered a present, let a long a cake.
I still had some Bertie Botts's Every Flavor beans that haven't been opened yet. I was going to give it to Harry as a present. Nothing much since we can't go out and we don't have money. Well we have money but its wizarding money.
At that moment, Uncle Vernon cleared his throat importantly and spoke "Now, as we all know, today is a very important day." I look up he couldn't be thinking about our birthday could he? "This could well be the day I make the biggest deal of my career," I look back to my eggs. I knew it would be too good to be true. I mean it would be nice if they just at least said happy birthday.
Of course Uncle Vernon was talking about his stupid dinner party. He's been talking about it nonstop for the past two weeks. It was some Rich builder and his wife that was coming to dinner and Uncle Vernon was hoping to get a huge order from him, Uncle Vernon's company made drills.
"I think we should run through the schedule one more time." Uncle Vernon said. "We should all be in position at eight o'clock. Petunia you will be…?"
"In the lounge," Aunt Petunia spoke promptly, "waiting to welcome them graciously to our home." He nodded his fat head "Good, good. And Dudley?"
"I'll be waiting to open the door." Dudley put on a foul, simpering smile. "May I take your coats, Mr. and Mrs. Mason?" I forced myself not to roll my eyes in annoyance. "They'll love him!" Aunt Petunia cried rapturously. "Excellent, Dudley," Uncle Vernon said before he faced me and Harry. "And you two?" Harry spoke for me.
"We'll be in our bedroom, making no noise and pretending we aren't here." He said it in a toneless voice. "Exactly," Uncle Vernon said nastily. "I will lead them into the lounge, introduce you, Petunia, and pour them drinks. At eight fifteen…"
"I'll announce dinner," Aunt Petunia said.
"And Dudley you'll say…"
"May I take you through to the dining room, Mrs. Mason?" Dudley said offering his fat arm to an invisible woman. "My perfect little gentleman!" sniffled Aunt Petunia. Oh how wrong she was. "And you two?" Uncle Vernon spoke viciously. "We'll be in our room, making no noise and pretending we aren't there." I spoke dully this time. I hated this. I wanted to be back at school so badly. "Precisely, now, we should aim to get a few good compliments at dinner. Petunia, any ideas?"
"Vernon tells me you're a wonderful golfer, Mr. Mason…Do tell me where you bought your dress Mrs. Mason…" again Uncle Vernon nodded his fat head "Perfect…Dudley?"
"How about…'We had to write an essay about our hero at school, Mr. Mason, and I wrote about you.'" This was getting to be too much. I was having so much trouble to keep my laughter in. This was getting to be too much! Aunt Petunia burst into tears and hugged the boy, and I saw Harry lunge under the table cracking up as softly as he could. I guess he couldn't take it either.
"And you two?" Harry was fight to keep a straight face as he sat back up. "We'll be in our room, making no noise and pretending we aren't here." We both said together I know that bothers Uncle Vernon when we speak simultaneously every now and then. Sometimes we can't help it. It just happens. Just like us being magical. If only they would accept that. But that would never happen.
"Too right, you will," He said oh so forcefully. "The Masons don't know anything about you two and it's going to stay that way. When dinner's over, you take Mrs. Mason back to the lounge for coffee, Petunia, and I'll bring the subject around to drills. With any luck, I'll have the deal signed and sealed before the news at ten. Be shopping for a vacation home in Majorca this time tomorrow."
This would such a great time to be feeling excited for any normal family but like I've said before. We aren't a normal family. Harry and I get abused nonstop here, it gets sad to be perfectly honest. Family is supposed to be there for you, protect you, and show you love and affection when you're down in the dumps. I mean Harry and I care for each other since the Dursleys wouldn't even want to touch us with a six foot pole.
The Dursleys wouldn't like us in Majorca any more than they do now here. "Right, I'm off into town to pick up the dinner in jackets for Dudley and me. And you two," he snarled looking down at me then at Harry. "You two stay out of your aunt's way while she's cleaning." I nodded my head sharply and watch him leave a small hop to his step.
When he was out of sight I turned to see Harry yet…he was gone. He had left through the back door. It was a wonderfully beautiful day outside. I decided this was the best time to cheer him up and give him his present than ever.
I dash up the stairs and walk over to our closet pulling out the box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans and shove them into one of the oversized pants pockets before walking out into the warm weather. I saw Harry slumped down on the garden bench.
"Hey Harry, can I join you?" he shrugged his shoulders. He seemed so sad. I took my seat next to my brother and was quiet for a while "This is a sucky birthday." I nodded in agreement. "Yeah…close your eyes and hold out your hand." He sighed "Lizzy I'm not really in the mood to…"
I bump shoulders with him "Come on please?" he sighed but did as I requested. I pull out the box from my pockets and place it in his hand. "Okay open." He let out a small laugh staring down at the candies. "I thought Uncle Vernon took away all our 'freaky' things the minute we got back?" I nodded and play with my thumbs.
"Remember all the candies we had left over on the way home?" he nodded his head "Uncle Vernon has those locked away. I was able to sneak this back when he wasn't looking." He shook his head "Thanks…why do you think they haven't written to us?" I sighed and shrugged my shoulders.
I lean my head on Harry's shoulder as he stared at the hedge. "Do you think…do you think they were just acting to be our friends?" I whisper sadly "Maybe…" I missed Hermione, Ron; oh I missed the Twins so much. They always knew how to make me smile. Make me happy. Countless times over the summer Harry has had to turn away from using magic to unlock the cage to talk to Hermione or Ron. It was too risky.
I found these bobby pins and tried to pick the locks but it was better said than done. I didn't know how to open a lock with bobby pins. I saw it on TV once! I figured hey that might work so I tried but nope I don't know what to do next so I messed that idea up. Hermione said she would talk to her parents about letting me or Harry stay the night over the summer but we haven't even heard from her. I mean heck even Draco Malfoy who had this weird crush on me during school said he would owl me yet he never did!
I really wished I could use magic but unfortunately magic is forbidden outside of school. The Dursleys didn't know this though. The first couple of weeks were fun saying random words that would sound like a spell causing Dudley to run out of the room with his tail between his legs. Well I wish he still had his tail it would be more fun to see and threaten him with. But…since my friends haven't written to me or Harry it just felt so abandoned here in the Muggle world.
I'd give anything to have some contact with the Magical world. A Hogwarts letter, from Hagrid, heck maybe even Voldemort saying he was coming to kill us! That seems a bit farfetched but who cares! It would have been nice to know I wasn't dreaming this entire thing. I blink slightly confused when Harry shot up making me fall on my face. "Ow…" I mumble staying in my spot. "I know what day it is," Dudley sang, waddling over toward us.
"What?" I ask confused sitting up staring at my stupid fat cousin. "I know what day it is," Dudley repeated now in front of us. I gasp dramatically "Well done," said Harry. "So you've finally learned the days of the week."
"Today's your birthday," he sneered. "How come you haven't got any cards? Haven't you even got friends at that freak place?" I stand staring at Dudley "Better be careful, you wouldn't want your mum talking about our school." I spoke coolly. I watched as Dudley hitched up his trousers, which were slipping down his fat bottom.
"Whats that?" He asked snatching the candy from Harry's hand "It's candy." He opened the box and looked them over. He pulled out a green one and stuck it in his mouth and made the most disgusted face he could muster. He quickly spat it out and tossed the box on the ground whipping his tongue on his sleeve.
"That isn't candy!" He yelled as I crouched down to gather the remainder of the candy "That tasted like yard clippings!" I shrug "Should have read the warning label." I mutter shoving it in my pocket. "You two are freaks to think that's candy!" I smirk "All us 'freaks' enjoy them." I say popping on off the ground in my mouth. Looking at Harry who was looking at me expectedly "Taste like soap." He laughed at me and took one in his. "Taste like dirt."
I giggle at him and smile at Dudley "See it's a game." He scrunched his nose in disgust. "Why're you staring at the hedge?" Dudley asked with a suspicious tone changing the subject. "I'm trying to decide what would be the best spell to set it on fire," I smirk slightly at Harry. He had to be the coolest older brother out there. The pure look of panic on his fat face brightened my mood. Dudley stumbled backward in shock.
"You c-cant…Dad told you two you're not to do m-magic- he said he'll chuck you both out of the house…and you haven't got anywhere else to go- you haven't got any friends to take you…" I had to cover my mouth to hold in my laughter "Jiggery pokery!" Harry said with such a fierce voice. "Hocus pocus squiggly wiggly…"
"MUUUUM!" Dudley howled, tripping over his feet as he dashed back toward the house. "MUUM! They're doing you know what! I yelped diving toward the ground to avoid getting hit with a soapy frying pan. I didn't even do anything! Aunt Petunia made me clean again. I had to clean the house top to bottom for the Masons or else I'd never eat again.
Dudley kept making a bigger mess for me to clean after I cleaned up a certain spot. Don't get me wrong I loved being able to clean the potions classroom but Professor Snape didn't give me an even bigger mess after I finished one project and have to redo it! Dudley lolled around watching TV and eating ice cream, while Harry had to clean the windows, wash the car, mow the lawn, trim the flowerbeds, prune and water the roses, and repaint the garden bench.
Poor Harry. I cringe in pain feeling an ice cold bowl slam into my back as I tried to pick up Dudley's discarded snack wrappers. "MUM! Elizabeth broke my ice cream bowl and made a mess!" He smiled wickedly at me.
Are you kidding me?! "I see she did! Clean this up this instant! And you can forget about eating tonight or any night for the next few days young lady!" What? I didn't do it! Ugh! Why can't I be back at Hogwarts? I'd rather take on Fluffy then deal with these people!
I sighed for the next hour I had to try and get the same chocolate stain out of the carpet since Dudley 'accidently' kept ruining the carpet. He was such a little git. Oh someone hit me with a bludger if I ever say Draco Malfoy is an annoying git. Seriously I'd rather deal with his constant flirting then deal with Dudley. At least with Draco he is someone to have a good conversation with. Speaking of Draco I still haven't taken my bracelet off.
I missed that little jerk he grew on me kind of. Oh if he could see me now, being a personal slave to a stupid fat muggle who abuses me all the time, the muggle world sucked. I sighed and started to dust the living room and make the wood shine. Around seven thirty; Aunt Petunia called Harry in "Get in here! And walk on the newspaper!"
On top of the fridge was tonight's dessert. A huge mound of whipped cream and sugar violates on top of some pudding. Then for dinner there was a lion of roast pork which was sizzling in the oven. "Eat quickly! The Masons will be here soon!" She snapped pointing to two slices of bread and a lump of cheese on the kitchen table.
He quickly washed his hands and scarfed down his dinner. The moment he finished, Aunt Petunia shoved his plate in my hands to clean "Upstairs! Hurry!" I quickly clean the dish and dash upstairs behind my brother.
I didn't even bother to look at Uncle Vernon in the living room. He and Dudley were in bow ties and dinner jackets. Just as we reached the upstairs landing the doorbell rang. Uncle Vernon's furious face appeared at the foot of the stairs. "Remember, one sound…" I left to our room and slide inside yet…there was someone on our bed…I was just going to sleep but not anymore.
"What?" I whisper in utter shock staring at the creature before me.
So there it is! Man I feel like this should have taken me longer to write but oh well. So here is the first chapter of the second book and Lizzy and Harry want nothing more than to go back to school. Then again my little creatures who wouldn't want to go to Hogwarts? Stupid muggles that's who! Now who's in the bed? Oh like we don't know! Haha well I know by Monday I won't be updating so quickly all the time I'll be busy with school. Thankfully I didn't have much to do over the weekend so I could write and finish off the first book. Tell me what you think in the comments!
