"Mulan..."
She looked at him, tears freely escaping her eyes. She couldn't believe the situation they were in. How could this happen? I mean, it always happens in stories and fairytales, but not in real life, right?
Wrong.
It was a miracle the rope hadn't torn already, but it would if something didn't happen soon. She couldn't bear to lose him. Not Shang, not even when everything between them seemed to be falling apart, she still loved him with all her heart.
Speaking of falling...
"I'm sorry."
Sorry for what? He hadn't done anything. Even if it was his fault for the situation- which it wasn't- at least she could spend her final moments with him. Why would he be sorr-
His hand. His grip, slipping, loosening. He had said the rope wouldn't hold both their weight, but she didn't actually think...
He was going to let go.
"Please..." She tried gripping his hand tighter, she couldn't lose him! She had been so overjoyed only a few days ago about their engagement, and now he was going to do what he could to save her. Even if that meant letting himself die. His hand felt as though it was becoming transparent. He seemed to become heavier and heavier, until-
Her hand was empty.
"Shang!" She watched him close his eyes, his figure quickly shrinking as he fell. She couldn't help but reach her hand out to him, "SHANG!" She couldn't believe it. He risked his life to save hers. As tears streamed down her cheeks, all she could do was watch as the love of her life was being sucked into a pit of despair. Chien-Po, Ling, Yao, and the princesses were equally shocked. Mulan didn't know what to do, to think. To feel.
No, she knew what to feel.
She knew EXACTLY what to feel.
She lifted her hot, tear-striped face in realization. If Shang risked his life for hers, then he truly loved her, more than she could say. And she would do the same.
Then she should do the same.
Let go.
And spend her final moments with the one she loves. Mulan closed her eyes, her face furrowing into a look of determination. She knew her friends would be hysterical towards her decision, but if she loved Shang as much as he did her, then she would do everything in her power to keep them side-by-side.
And she did.
"MULAN!" her friends cried out in unison. She had done it. She let go. And was falling.
It was a rather pleasant feeling, the air thrust itself against your body, as if it was washing away all your pains, your worries. Almost making one forget what came when they reached the bottom. Mulan could hear the cries of the soldiers and princesses fading as she fell. She narrowed her body to fall swifter, and eventually caught sight of Shang.
"Mulan!" he cried as he recognized the figure zooming towards him. What was she doing? Was she out of her mind?! He had sacrificed himself to SAVE her from falling. Or maybe the rope had given out anyway? Either way, there she was.
"What are you doi-" As she drew closer to him, Mulan threw her arms around his neck, ceasing to let go. "Mulan!" Shang was shocked, but also somewhat upset, "What are you doing?!" Mulan looked at him with a face full of determination, much to Shang's surprise. She quickly answered him, fear evident in her voice, "I could've stayed, survived, marry another, continue life being a warrior, the heroine of China," she cried, "I could've lived a thousand different lives." Shang was confused, "Wha-" "But none of those live would be worth living..." she interrupted, "...if I had to live them without you." Shang's eyes widened.
Did Mulan really love him so? Enough to leave behind everything: her future, her family, her life.
For him. She just proved to Shang she could not stand to live without him.
He was speechless.
He looked at her.
She looked at him.
There was nothing more to be said. But he knew what needed to be done. If they were going to die anyway, what did tradition matter to him? He wrapped his arms around her waist, and planted his lips firmly onto hers. She was surprised, but eventually returned the kiss.
They knew they didn't have much time, they knew they wouldn't make it to tomorrow, but tomorrow didn't matter. All that mattered right now, was them. The only thing that could decide what happened now,
was destiny.
