This story takes place about a year after Return of the King. Legolas and Gimli
have returned from touring Fangorn and the Glittering Caves and Frodo has not yet gone
to the Grey Havens. I have tried to be as close to the book as possible, but correct me if I
missed anything.

THE STORY OF LEGOLAS

"Arwen," Legolas cried, "Oh Arwen, don't you remember?"
"I remember," Arwen sighed. "Oh Legolas, don't remind me. I'm sorry I hurt
you."
It was the night before Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, and there was a big party
in Minas Tirith. Legolas had caught up with Arwen when she'd slipped outside for a
breath of air, determined to talk to her.
Legolas didn't know why he'd decided to come to the wedding. But he and Gimli
had been invited to come, and it would have been rude to refuse (Merry, Pippin, Sam and
Frodo had been invited too, but they'd been too busy to come.) Legolas had just returned
from visiting the Glittering Caves with Gimli, and before that they'd been in Fangorn.
"No, you can't be marrying Aragorn," Legolas said grimly. "I won't believe it. I
had hoped it was only a passing crush."
Arwen turned her stunning blue eyes on him. "I love Aragorn, Legolas."
"I remember you visiting my father in Mirkwood," Legolas told her. "When I first
saw you, I loved you. I was the happiest elf alive when you agreed to marry me. True,
Elrond wasn't happy, but did I care about that? I'm so glad we decided to keep our
betrothal a secret, or all the other elves would scorn me for losing you to a mortal."
"Legolas…" Arwen said gently.
"And then what do you do?" Legolas cried. "Right after our betrothal you go to
Lothlorien and meet up with Aragorn!"
"Legolas!" Arwen pleaded. "I'm sorry, but I can't control my heart. Please
understand. Don't you like Aragorn?"
"He's a fine man and a noble king," Legolas replied, "But I hate him when he'd
around you."
"You know what I think?" Arwen cried, "I think it's not your heart that's broken,
but your pride!"
"Arwen," Legolas said, "How can you say that? I love you, I love you to the ends
of the earth. Do you really want to be a mortal? Do you really want to die?"
"If I'm with the one I love, yes," Arwen replied. Legolas sighed heavily.
"I hoped you'd change your mind," he said, "I hoped that ever since you told me
you were breaking off our engagement."
"You shouldn't have hoped," Arwen replied. "It was wrong to hope."
"How could I but hope around you Arwen," Legolas said sadly. "Imagine my
surprise when I was in Rivendell (to tell Gandalf that Gollum had escaped) and I found
Aragorn there too, the one you'd left me for? I wanted to hate him, yet I could not. He is
a brave man, but a man nonetheless."
He turned his head away. "I hope you'll be happy."
"Of course I'll be happy," Arwen answered. "Legolas, I'm sorry I hurt. I'm sorry
I left you and broke your heart. But I've chosen, and I love the one I've chosen."
"Do you, um, still care for me?"
"Legolas!" Arwen cried.
"Do you?" Legolas asked. "Oh Arwen, of all this, the worst thing is that now
you'll have to die!"
"I never completely quit caring for you," Arwen told him. "Oh, it's wicked to say
this! But I had to choose between you two, and I chose Aragorn. I haven't yet regretted
it."
"You just want to be queen!" Legolas accused.
"No, Legolas, no," Arwen cried, "I truly do love Aragorn. With all my heart.
"Thank you," Legolas replied bitterly. "That made me feel so much better."
"Legolas, I'm sorry!" Arwen said, but Legolas was leaving.
"Good-bye Arwen," he said, "I'll never quit loving you."

Okay, this is just an idea that popped into my head one night and I had to write it.
