A/N: Hello again. It's been a hot minute since I posted something on here but I watched the new episodes of MML and it rekindled my love for this show! Here's a Zalissa one-shot because we are seriously lacking on the Zalissa fics, lmao. Enjoy?
'An Old Married Couple'
Melissa rolled her eyes for the hundredth time that day, "Zack, I have a very strong urge to punch you right now."
"Hey! I have a point," her friend began to explain himself, "You see, water isn't wet because water is the thing that is making a thing wet! Fire is not burned because it is what's doing the burning. Water can't make water wet-"
"Because water is already wet!" she loudly argued, "You are making zero sense!"
"Okay, okay. Hear me out for one second." Melissa plugs her ears with her fingers and Zack defeatedly sighs.
Milo watches behind them, munching on the popcorn he stashed inside his backpack. The three were currently walking home from the bus stop and the Murphy couldn't help but feel amused at his friends' long debate. They have been repeatedly stating the same points since the middle of their bus ride that he could see some of the other students silently groan and push their earphones deeper into their ears. Some listened intently and found it as a source of entertainment from the surprising lack of Murphy's Law. Amanda also gave him an apologetic look from her spot while trying to suppress her giggles. The abrupt engine shutdown didn't even stop them. As said before, he found it very amusing.
"You know," he started as the two turned to Milo, startled. They have obviously forgotten that he existed for a few moments. He swallows a handful of popcorn, bracing for impact, "Don't kill me but you guys are arguing like an old married couple and I'm like your metaphorical son or something!" Their eyes widened.
"We are not a couple!" Zack and Melissa shouted in unison, "Jinx! You owe me a soda!"
Milo raises his eyebrows in disbelief. 'They are only proving my point,' he thought with a small grin. When they finally approach the Murphy house, the boy clips his popcorn bag closed and bid the pair farewell.
"See ya tomorrow, guys!" he waved from his porch, closing the front door. The window next to it then smashes into smithereens. "Dang it, Milo!" his older sister, Sara was heard from inside the house, "We just repaired that two days ago!" Milo laughs, "Well, thank goodness for the Murphy discount."
The two laughs along with him then continued on the sidewalk. "An old married couple, huh…" Melissa murmured. Zack shrugged, "Yeah, like, we banter and bicker a lot but definitely not like a couple! We aren't on that level yet…"
"Yet?"
"Ack! Sorry! That was not what I meant! I meant that-"
"No, no, no, don't worry! I- I understand! I think I should apologize for reacting so quickly," the curly haired teen nervously looks down at the cement path. Suddenly, the air seemed heavier and thicker around them. "Milo also said he was like our metaphorical son," Zack continues, chuckling like it was the most ridiculous thing ever.
"If I'm gonna be honest with you, and yes, this sounds weird but... I sometimes think about that too."
"Really?" he chuckles in the same manner.
"I mean, every time he gets into something bad, we'd always chase after him!" She lowers her voice to a whisper, "Like parents!"
They both scrunch their noses at this and erupt into giggles.
Zack calms himself down, "I kinda agree, actually. Remember the Pistachion situation?"
"Exactly! And I cannot forget about the whole camping chase…"
"We can never forget about the camping chase."
"That was arguably our most 'parent' moment," Melissa points out before sighing, "God, that felt so weird to say…" Her eyes return to the pavement once more.
In a minute that felt like five, they finally reach Zack's house. "Well, I'll see you tomorrow?" Melissa asks as she stares off to the distance. Zack nods, "Yeah… But before I go and whatever, can we… Can we forget that conversation, you know, ever happened?"
"Oh yeah, definitely," she finally looks at him for the first time in what seemed like forever, "I was actually about to ask you the same."
"Deal?" He offers his hand for her to shake and she accepts. "Deal." And with final goodbyes, they separate and Melissa returns to her own home.
However, despite shaking on forgetting their little chat ever occurred, the two couldn't help but replay it in their heads at 2 AM in the morning and overthink every word they had said. Emotions are truly wonderful to the teenage human mind.
