Just a songfic I thought I'd make until I can get rid of my writer's block, hope enjoy! I don't own The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton does, and I don't own the song from Land Before Time, "Always There" I just changed a few parts.
It was the middle of the night and the Curtis house was completely peaceful at the moment. Darry and Soda were sleeping soundly until a small whimpering awoke both of the brothers from their slumber. The youngest Curtis, Ponyboy, was having another nightmare, crying in his sleep. Soda nudged Pony awake as Darry came into the room, fully alert.
"Hey Pony, you're okay, it's just a dream, you're okay now" Darry said while smoothing out his youngest brother's hair.
"Yeah Pony, it's okay, Darry and me are here" Soda comforted while wiping away the tears that fell.
Even though his brothers' words were reassuring, Ponyboy didn't calm down. "No, it's not okay! It's not…" Pony trailed off and a fresh set of tears began falling, even though he tried with all of his might to hold them in.
"What's not okay, hmm?" Soda spoke up softly.
"I…I can't remember" Ponyboy finally admitted and angrily swiped at his tears.
"That's alright Pony, we know you can't remember your dream-"Darry began.
"No" Pony cut in "I can't remember them, Mom and Dad. I don't remember their faces, their voices, or anything else about them, and when I try to remember something or look at pictures, it hurts. It makes me realize that they are really gone."
Soda and Darry both looked from each other to Ponyboy at a total loss of what to do.
Finally, Soda cupped Pony's chin with his hand so that he would look at him and then began to sing softly.
When
the sun went down
And everyone was sleeping
If I heard a
sound
Like things around me creeping
She would wrap her arms
around me
And tell me "Don't be scared"
And I knew
that I was safe because
She's always there
Darry then wrapped his arm around his brother's shoulders. Pony turned his attention to Darry as he sang gently.
When
the storms would come
And things would seem so bad
And I'd
wanna cry
(Almost)
I'd listen to our dad
He promised that
the rain would pass
The day would soon be fair
And I never was
afraid because
He's always there
The boys smiled toward each other as Darry and Soda began to harmonize.
Always
there
Someone you can count on
To comfort you
Always
there
Like a green, green valley
You can come home to.
Ponyboy looked at his brothers and gave them a real smile, something he hasn't been able to do in a long time.
I
remember now
Like it was yesterday
They
would hold me close
And then I'd hear them say
"You know
we'll never leave you...
You can find us everywhere
In the
morning light, the evening star
We're always there"
Always
there
Someone you can count on
To comfort you
Always
there
Like a green, green valley
You can come home to
The three brothers huddled together and for once, they all just sat and cried. It was short lived though, for the familiar voice of Steve called out from the living room, "Soda you awake?"
Soda quickly wiped his tears away with his sleeve. Then with a 'goodnight' to both of his brothers, made his way into the living room.
Darry smiled and ruffled Ponyboy's hair. Pony knocked his hand away and began to smooth his hair back down. Darry chuckled, turned out the lights, and left with a 'goodnight' of his own.
Ponyboy settled back down under the warmth of his quilt once his tears were gone. He sighed contently and looked up at the midnight sky through his window. There he could see the two brightest stars in the sky next to each other and right in Pony's line of view. He stared at the stars for a few moments and then sang two words while drifting back to sleep…
Always there.
