A Date with Pele
The curly-haired detective stepped out of the shower and carefully toweled himself off. Then he gingerly dressed for work. Every movement was a new experience in pain. The required morning shave was torturous. How am I going to hide this from Steve? he wondered.
Danny negotiated the Palace steps at a slower pace than usual, all the while self-conscious of his awkward gait. He was relieved to find that he had made it in to the office ahead of the other guys, but Jenny was in and had already made coffee. The secretary looked at him sympathetically, but he changed the subject before she could comment on his condition. The young detective grabbed a cup of cold water instead of the usual coffee and disappeared into his cubicle. He winced as he made contact with his desk chair then busied himself with paperwork.
The various arrest forms and evidence files were not enough of a distraction from his suffering. Danny continued to alternate between feeling hot and cold, even a bit nauseous. Though it was not yet eight in the morning, he loosened his tie and undid the top two buttons of his dress shirt, surprised to find his hands trembling uncontrollably. Great, Williams, just great! What am I going to do if I have to bolt out of here at a moment's notice?

Kono strolled through the office door whistling a tune, and then flashed Jenny a big white-toothed grin.
"Top of da morning, Jenny!" the big Hawaiian greeted cheerfully.
Jenny smiled back then caught Kono's eye and glanced toward Danny's cubicle. Her brow wrinkled with concern.
"Danny's not feeling so well, Kono. Maybe you should talk to him."
The smile faded from Kono's face and he moved to the doorway of his colleague's small office. One look at his miserable friend told Kono everything he needed to know.
"Yo Danny, not feeling so good?"
Danny looked up at the large detective, somewhat annoyed that he appeared to be in top shape after their day off surfing the North Shore.
"No, I'm not," he growled under his breath.
Kono was torn between amusement and sympathy.
"You haoles gotta be careful in dat sun, bruddah! You looking like you had a date with Pele!"
