The old world is gone. Elena isn't a cheerleader and Stefan isn't the idealistic vampire that he used to be.
Stefan knows that he'll never get any of it back.
He doesn't even know if Elena will be ever be a human again, but a part of him still wants that life.
There's something soft and nostalgic and beautiful about their shared dream of becoming human, having children, growing old.
It's a fragile, tattered vision now, but Stefan holds onto it.
He will let Elena make her choice.
He knows that she might choose vampirism, but it doesn't matter to him.
It doesn't matter, and yet it still does. It's the only thing that pushes him along and keeps him alive sometimes.
Stefan knows that it's selfish, but he wants to shield Elena from the world.
He wants her to be human again. He wants it more than anything, and he would give up his immortal life in a heartbeat.
Stefan knows that he has turned Elena away too many times. It's over, but he can't help himself.
He has always been a romantic at heart, and he still wants Elena to be his girl.
It's so archaic, calling someone your girl. She's not his property.
Stefan shakes his head. He has to let go, but he always he's always had trouble with that too.
When this is all over, Stefan will learn to let go. He has to.
For now, he just needs to believe that there's a chance that Elena might come back to him.
It's delusional and selfish and probably impossible, but Stefan doesn't care.
He needs a purpose. He needs to romanticize something.
He will get this cure, just like he got the cure for Damon's werewolf bite a year ago.
Stefan will never let go of either of them.
He knows that he can't control free-spirited, fiercely independent Damon, but Stefan doesn't want to lose his only brother in the world.
That's one of the reasons why he wants to stay away from Elena for now. He desperately wants her to look at him with that old tenderness, but he can't lose his brother over this, not now.
They've been through so much, and Damon has been at death's door far too often for Stefan's liking.
Stefan wants to protect both of them, but he can't predict what will happen with the curse or Jeremy or Silas.
It's all one big unknown, and the thought terrifies him.
Stefan will try his best to save them, but anything could happen.
The mark could kill Jeremy. One of the hunters could capture Elena or Damon.
Stefan sighs and stares ahead. He isn't looking into the future, but he wishes that he could.
He knows what he has to do. He will have to trust Elena and even Damon, as much as it pains him to do so.
Stefan looks at the sky and whispers a quick prayer before they leave for Nova Scotia.
"Please, let us all get out of this alive."
He swallows his uncertainty and heads out the door.
End.
