Gene Hunt's secret fantasy was simply being sheriff to a small, loyal town. He didn't go there much, anymore, though. It had been his private Saturday morning picture show when he was a lad but he was a man now and he had what he wanted. He didn't need fantasy.

His desertion had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that every time he tuned in he found the sheriff as drunk as he himself was and on the verge of realising it was Frank Miller who ran things. Gene would snap his mental set off, quick.

Sometimes, the set would switch itself back on and Gene would itch to take a swing at the irritating new bartender in the pansy, stripey shirt. The sheriff wanted to sit and listen - he wouldn't be told it was his townspeople who were going to suffer. He wouldn't be told the little prick from the east, with all his fancy talk, was getting him riled up for a showdown he wasn't going to win.

When the sheriff beat Miller's draw no one was more surprised that Gene, and he was instantly ashamed. He thought he'd had more confidence than that. He would have, from now on.

He didn't go to that town much, anymore. He had what he wanted.
