The New Coat

Amy was just about to run away from the crumbling ground when she turned suddenly. She stood still for a moment and looked the Doctor up and down with an appraising eye.

"By the way, Doctor, I am loving that new coat," she said appreciatively, walking in a circle around the Time Lord. Coming around to the front, she grabbed him by the lapels, drawing him closer, and looked him in the eye mischievously. "Very Sherlock Holmes. And you know, I always had a thing for Sherlock Holmes…"

The Doctor's eyes widened in shock as he pushed her away. "Amy!"

Amy burst out laughing at the almost terrified look on the Doctor's face and poked him in the chest teasingly. "I was only messing, Doctor – I just couldn't resist. You should see the look on your face!"

He frowned, having fallen for it again. He straightened his bow tie, trying to maintain some ounce of dignity. "Now Pond, run!" he admonished her, and turned around to face the monster that was emerging from the crumbling earth.

Rory looked at the Doctor suspiciously. There was something different…

"New coat," he remarked. "You look… different."

The Doctor thrust his hands in the deep pockets of the mossy green material. "I get cold sometimes. Couldn't find a tweed one thick enough."

Rory doubted this. He had seen the Doctor stand knee-deep in snow in just his shirt not shivering. He narrowed his eyes. "It's very… Sherlock Holmes. Amy used to be a big fan of him…" He drew closer to the Doctor, wondering, dreading…

"Don't worry Mr Pond," the Doctor replied, clapping Rory on the back so hard he winced. "She's all yours. I just felt like a change, that's all. Change is good."

He turned and walked briskly away, hearing Rory following, still not completely appeased. But as he felt the fabric of the long coat brushing his knees, he thought that maybe it wasn't such a change after all.

River Song watched the Doctor approaching, having anticipated his arrival. She immediately noticed the change. He was wearing a new long, mossy green coat, the ends of which flapped behind him in the breeze as he walked. It made him look more serious; older.

Traces of the worry lines still remained etched on his face even though the younger version of herself – Melody Pond, as she had been known back then – had been returned to her parents.

But she smiled and waved at the man who meant so much to her and the lines disappeared as he grinned and broke into a run when he saw her. It's been too long, she thought.

As he reached her she pulled him into a tight embrace which he returned, burying his head in her shoulder, glad to be reunited.

"Hello, my love," she said softly. "Thanks so much sweetie. For all that you did."

He released her and she stepped back a step to properly admire the new coat. The Doctor followed her gaze.

"Like it?" he asked.

"Love it," she affirmed. "You wear it way better than that guard."

The Doctor's eyes darkened as he remembered Melody Pond's prison.

"I love you River," he said, looking her straight in the eye. He didn't ever want to lose her again.

"Oh, shut up," River replied with a grin as she grabbed the lapels of his scratchy, woolly, handsome new coat and pulled him in for a kiss.
