A/N: I have now seen Phantom of the Opera live twice; once last year on Broadway and again just last night at the Peace Center in South Carolina. Broadway was far superior, but there was one point at the Peace Centerthat really struck a chord with me: During the final lair scene, when Christine kissed the Phantom, after she pulled away, the actor playing the Phantom shied away from her. That really stood out to me, especially since Hugh Panaro didn't do that when I saw the play on Broadway. And thus, this little drabble was born. Enjoy, and please don't forget to review.
He had spent so long thinking that he was the only one that she should be with. Yet as soon as her lips touched his, his mind went blank. After a breathless moment that passed by all too quickly and yet seemed like an eternity, she gently pulled herself away, but immediately embraced him. After years of knowing nothing else but torture and mockery at the hands of the rest of the human race, Erik likened Christine's embrace to that of an angel. He moved to hold his light closer to himself, but he stopped.
The faces of all those that he had killed flashed through his mind: the various kids who had mocked him during his childhood for his deformity and mask, his keeper at the fair, Piangi, and countless others. By the light of her love, the blackness of his bloodstained soul was brought into even clearer reality than it had ever been.
She looked up at him in confusion as he drew his arms back. As she moved, her hold on him loosened and he threw himself away from her. So long he had thought that he was the only one worthy of her. But now he knew just how wrong he had been in thinking that. He had tricked her into thinking that he was her Angel of Music, but now he knew that she was the true angel, and he was the one who was the most unworthy to be in her presence.
