Hugging Trees
We were walking down the street on a beautiful fall day. The leaves were all turned except for the occasional green leaf. The ground was already wet and colorful with leaves as well. Mikey was ahead of me, running and stopping every few feet to turn and smile at me. We had been out for an hour when I recommended we turn and go back to the orphanage. My husband and I had decided to adopt nearly a year ago and upon our first visit I had fallen in love with Mikey, the little 6 year old ball of wonder. His parents had died in a car accident and he had no relatives. He somehow managed to stay happy though and see the bright side of everything and now in less than a week he would be my son. It was amazing.
" Slow down Mikey!" I shouted.
" Come on Marie, you walk too slow!" he laughed but stopped any way and waited. He walked with me the rest of the way and as we reached the end of the street, he ran toward the last tree and hugged it.
" What are you doing that for?" I asked.
" To thank God for everything he's done for me. My mommy told me he was everywhere and before she died, I used to hug her to hug God. Now I hug tree's, and you," he explained.
" What do you have to thank God for?" I asked.
" Everything! Food, a house, and nice people to take care of me, like you," he answered simply. I was amazed that a little boy like Mikey could know so much. A lot of adults, including myself would never be that smart or optimistic and I learned something that day. I learned to always look on the bright side and thank God for what I have rather than be mad at Him for what I don't have. Now it's not like I go around hugging trees all day but I definitely figured out how to make my life easier.
" That's very good Mikey," I said and I hugged him.
" Let's go it's cold out here," he said, smiling and we walked back to the big brick building.
