"Hello, Zuzu," a voice said from the darkness. The former Fire Lord jerked awake.
"Who's there? Show yourself!" he demanded, a fireball in his hands.
"It's just me, Zuzu," Azula said, stepping out of the shadows.
"Azula! What are you doing here?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm about to mourn becoming an only child."
"Mourn? You tried to kill me several times. Why would you mourn my death?"
"Because I'm your sister," was the unspoken reply.
I remember tears streaming down your face when Daddy tried to burn it off,
when all those shadows almost killed your light.
I remember, you said, "Don't leave me here alone."
But all that's dead and gone and past tonight.
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down.
You'll be alright, no-one can hurt you now.
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound.
Azula sat by his bed, her smooth hand over his wrinkled one, quietly singing him to sleep.
Don't you dare look out your window,
darling everything's on fire.
The war outside our door keeps raging on.
Hold on to this lullaby;
even when music's gone.
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down.
You'll be alright, no-one can hurt you now.
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound.
Zuko's eyes drifted shut, and his breathing was shallow but regular.
Just close your eyes,
you'll be alright,
come morning light,
you and I'll be safe and sound . . .
Zuko let out a final exhale, his sister's spirit joining the spirit of a teenaged boy with shaggy hair falling into his face as their mother, cousin, and uncle looked on with pride.
AN: Wow, that was unexpected. I was listening to "Safe and Sound," by Taylor Swift, and thinking, "Wow, this would be a great thing for Ursa to sing to Dying!Zuko, but then Azula demanded attention, the writing happened and this came out.
On another note, I need to stop writing so many Avatar one-shots.
